Rosa 'Virgo' is a modern variety extensively planted in gardens, owing its success to its large, perfectly formed, elegant white flower. It is perfect in borders and in bouquets. Its large turbinated roses are often solitary. They are composed of multiple white petals wrapped around a tightly packed centre that is sometimes warmed with cream. It generously blooms from May to October, on long and sturdy stems that hold up well in a vase. Its lightly scented flowers are worthy of the grandest occasions.
While modern roses are often criticised for their stiffness and weak disease resistance, 'Virgo' has never waned in popularity since its creation in 1947. This Modern Hybrid Tea rose is a French creation by Charles Mallerin, endowed with timeless elegance that withstands the test of time and trends. It forms a small, bushy, upright, and open shrub, with a rapid growth rate. It will reach about 1m (3ft) in height and 80cm (32in) in width. It bears dark green satin foliage. From May-June to September-October, pale yellow-pink buds bloom. They are either solitary or grouped in 4 or 5. They open into beautiful modern roses with a turbinated shape, 10 to 12cm (4 to 5in) wide. The blooms are carried by long, sturdy, and thorny stems. The 26 to 40 petals that make up the flower are lightly tinged with cream at the centre. Their light scent becomes more obvious in cool weather.
'Virgo' has an accommodating nature, perfect roses, and a simple and chic style. It is undoubtedly a beautiful variety for cut flowers. It will work wonders in a large rose bed. Plant it with red roses like 'Eric Tabarly' and Cherry Lady®, white roses like 'Fée des Neiges', silver-pink roses like 'Wedding Bells', or mauve roses like 'Blue Girl'. It can be grown in a mixed hedge, or even as a standalone plant in a well-maintained garden. It adapts to all soils, even relatively dry and poor ones, and to all climates. It pairs perfectly with easy-to-grow perennials such as geraniums, campanulas, foxgloves, or even grasses in a very innovative style.

Botanical data
Plant in a sunny or lightly shaded location. Modern roses are tolerant, but do not appreciate excessive limestone. They will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well worked, not too heavy, and sufficiently rich. To plant your rose, work the soil by crumbling it and add fertiliser to the bottom of the planting hole (dried blood or dehydrated horn, for example). Water generously after planting to remove any air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate rooting.
Pruning is essential for flowering. It is done in three steps:
1. Maintenance pruning: regularly shorten the branches that have flowered during the season. To encourage the reblooming of perpetual roses, remove the faded flowers along with their stem, leaving 2 or 3 leaves.
2. Preparatory pruning in autumn: light pruning that anticipates the proper spring pruning. It is not recommended in regions with cold winters in order to avoid weakening the bush.
3. Spring pruning: in February-March, when the buds have developed into shoots 2 to 3cm (1in) long, trim the young strong branches by a quarter of their length.
Pruning always aims to clear the heart of the bush and remove dead wood, diseased branches, and weak shoots. The most vigorous branches, usually 3 to 6 well-positioned ones, will be kept to maintain an attractive habit. Always prune at a slant, ½ cm or 1cm (0.4in) above an outward-facing bud.
Roses are often stained or unsightly at the end of summer, but this will not hinder their development. These spots are not harmful to the rose, but are a natural phenomenon.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
