Description

The Winter Belles Phoebe bush is a cross between Erica carnea and Erica erigena. This bush has a rounded and upright habit and blooms early from September to March. These large salmon-pink flowers form a cluster that is 3 to 10 cm (1.2 - 3.9 in) long.

The foliage of the Winter Belles Erica is evergreen. It consists of lance-shaped leaves that are medium green and 3 to 10 mm (0.1 - 0.4 in) long. At maturity, the bush can reach a height of 60 cm (23.6 in).

Very hardy, this bush grows in Europe, temperate Africa, as well as in the temperate regions of western and central Asia. It is an ideal bush to plant in winter heather beds, especially with other Winter Belles Erica varieties such as Erica Katia. Furthermore, it is an excellent ground cover, whether planted alone or combined with other acid-loving plants or dwarf conifers.

Planting and care

The Erica Winter Belles enjoys being in full sun in any type of soil as long as it is acidic and well-drained. Easy to grow, water it once or twice a week depending on the ambient temperature. Every year after flowering, prune the faded branches to 2 cm (0.8 in) from the previous year's shoot. Erica can be susceptible to phytophthora (root rot), pythium, and rhizoctonia during hot and humid periods.
