Continues its growth after a winter with successive frosts followed by abundant spring rains. Foliage is nice and green. Awaiting definitive regrowth and the next colourful flowering.

Description

Hibiscus syriacus 'Hamabo' is a hardy shrub, adorned with numerous cup-shaped flowers, with pale pink petals spotted with purple-red in the centre.

Also known as "Tree Mallow", this upright Althaea grows quite slowly, reaching 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) in 3 years. The deciduous, alternate, simple, crenate leaves are dark green and 10 cm (3.9 in) long. The large cup-shaped, solitary flowers, 8 cm (3.1 in) in diameter, have pale pink petals with spots of purple-red in the centre, and last from August to October, followed by fruiting.

Originating from China, Hibiscus syriacus 'Hamabo' prefers a fresh, rich, well-drained soil that is preferably neutral, although it can tolerate limestone in a sufficiently sunlit and airy position. Remove faded flowers regularly as fruiting can harm the plant.

Hibiscus syriacus 'Hamabo' can be used as a solitary plant, in borders or as a free hedge alongside other shrubs such as buddleia or cherry laurel.

Tip: In regions with cool summers, opt for single-flowered forms of hibiscus over double-flowered varieties, as the latter only thrive in hot conditions.
