Description

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Klaveren', also known as Hydrangea serrata 'Klaveren', is a superb hybrid between H. serrata and H. macrophylla obtained by Pierre Michel Kerneur in France, in 1990. This hydrangea is quite hardy and forms a wide and flexible bush, adorned with large flat inflorescences whose large peripheral florets are open like flags in the wind. The colour of the inflorescences, pink with a blue heart, varies according to the nature of the soil. It will be more pink in neutral soil, and purple to blue in acidic soil.

Originating from Japan and Korea, Hydrangea serrata are very hardy plants, belonging to the Hydrangeaceae family.

'Klaveren' comes from a lucky sowing of Hydrangea serrata 'Blue bird'. It forms a ramified, ample, and natural bush. After 3 years, it will reach a height of 1.4m (5ft) with a similar width, or more in the long term, depending on growing conditions. It is characterised by large, light green, dentate leaves, which turn brown over the season, especially when the plant is exposed to morning sun, and in autumn. Its flat, airy panicles, 15 to 20cm (6 to 8in) wide, blossom from early July and fade in lovely shades. The large sterile flowers, with very fringed edges, surround fertile flowers in the shape of buttons. The flowers will be pink depending on whether your soil is acidic or neutral to limestone. New inflorescences appear until September. This variety can be planted in fairly cold climates. It tolerates sun quite well, if it's not scorching. Hydrangeas are robust plants that can live at least 50 years.

'Klaveren' has the vigour of hybrid plants. Particularly appreciating moist and rich soils, as well as a semi-shaded exposure, this variety will elegantly impose its ample silhouette and its generous and nuanced flowering. Hydrangeas are well known for brightening up the north side of houses. This one will thrive in a north, east or non-scorching west exposure, in borders, hedges, or in a large pot on a terrace or near a doorway. Even though they fear limestone, hydrangeas are not strictly speaking ericaceous plants; they like rich soils. Combine them with magellanica fuchsias or annual impatiens, or plant spring-flowering bulbs in front of their round silhouette. Enjoy their sumptuous flowering in the garden or in the house for a long time.

Delivered in a 2-litre pot, with 3 to 5 branches; the perfect size for a quick establishment.

Planting and care

Plant in spring or early autumn, preferably in a semi-shaded position, for example against an east-facing, or even north-facing wall. Keep it protected from cold and drying winds. It does not require ericaceous soil, but appreciates deep, cool, well-drained, fairly fertile soil, possibly enriched with a good base fertiliser before planting. If planting near a wall and the soil is dry at its base, place the root ball at least 30 to 40cm (12 to 16in) away from it and incorporate a quantity of well-decomposed compost to better retain moisture in the soil. Very hardy, it is not afraid to be planted in cold regions.

As for pruning, remove the faded flowers on the first bud or on the pair of buds directly below. When the plant is mature, prune the older stems back to the base by a quarter or a third. This will encourage the formation of young shoots. Carry out this pruning every year during March and April.
