More information

A new generation Rhododendron that, in addition to being more tolerant of soil than traditional varieties (pH 4.5 to 6, tolerating up to 7.5), offers vigorous growth and a profusion of scented white flowers. It tolerates pruning well, better than classic "rhodos". It is hardy beyond -20°C, enduring down to -24°C. Plant them without hesitation in any loose soil, without excess limestone though.

Description

Rhododendron White Dufthecke Inkarho is part of a new series of varieties with scented flowers, the "Dufthecke" series, grafted like all Inkharo rhododendrons on a plant which is much more tolerant towards clayey, loamy, or slightly chalky soils. 'White Dufthecke' is an evergreen bush, wider than tall, with vigorous growth, bearing a profusion of elegant white flowers accented with a discreet yellow throat. Nectar-rich, with a subtle yet present fragrance, it represents a new generation of Rhododendrons that challenges our preconceptions; it is as tolerant as a hydrangea, hardy and easy to grow.

Rhododendrons encompass over 800 species of the ericaceous family, cultivated for the beauty of their massive flowering. The history of Inkharo Rhododendrons, somewhat revolutionary plants recently showcased at the Chelsea Flower Show, began in Germany over 20 years ago. The discovery of a rhododendron naturally growing in a chalk quarry led to the possibility of grafting different varieties onto its extraordinary root system. Shrubs obtained through this method tolerate a wide range of soils with a pH ranging from 4.5 to 7.5, provided they are loose, fertile, moist, and not excessively chalky. In summary, soil suitable for hydrangeas. White Dufthecke forms a medium-sized bush, with a rounded and branched habit. Its growth is vigorous, generally reaching 1.50 m in height by 2 m wide at maturity. Its beautiful dark green, evergreen leaves are elliptical and cover the plant well. They have a fuzzy underside. From mid-May to early June, its abundant flowering overwhelms the bush: grouped in corymbs, its slightly fringed white flowers are adorned with a throat ranging from yellow to chartreuse green, with golden yellow stamens.

It is high time for Rhododendrons to break free from acidic soil and this is achieved with the new Inkarho varieties! Moreover, with this Dufthecke series, they are fragrant and vigorous in growth, in addition to having a particularly abundant and nectar-rich flowering. Rhododendron White Dufthecke is relatively tolerant regarding exposure; we recommend planting it in non-scorching sun or partial shade, preferably in the east where it will benefit from the morning sun while being protected from excessive heat. In the garden, as a hedge or in a border, its abundant and luminous flowering will easily embellish a shaded space. Much more tolerant than usual rhododendrons, it pairs, in a more classic way, with many other flowering bushes, not necessarily in acid soil: hydrangeas, mock oranges, Japanese quince trees, butterfly bushes, abelias, or autumn camellias. Japanese anemones will also be good companions, as well as silver candles and foxgloves, in the undergrowth.

Planting and care

Plant Rhododendron White Dufthecke Inkarho in a semi-shaded position, protected from cold and drying winds, in moist, loose, fertile soil. It will prefer a slightly calcareous soil (tolerating pH 7.5), neutral or acidic (pH 4.5 to 6.5). Dig a hole three times the size of the pot. Soak the root ball in water and plant the bush to the collar level, in a nourishing mix composed of leaf compost, gravel or pumice, and loam or topsoil, as Rhododendron Inkarho are demanding plants. Water generously and keep the soil consistently moist. Azaleas and Rhododendrons have a rather shallow root system. Therefore, they are sensitive to long periods of drought. Hence, enriching the soil with humus and abundant watering during dry periods are recommended. Apply a layer of bark or mulch at the base of the bush every spring to maintain soil moisture while keeping a slightly acidic pH. Maintenance involves removing faded flowers after flowering and cleaning it from dead branches.

Azaleas and Rhododendrons can sometimes be attacked by vine weevils that eat the edges of the leaves and rootlets, as well as by the famous "rhododendron borer" which usually does not cause significant damage. There are effective natural solutions against vine weevils. Yellowing of the leaves (chlorosis) in Rhododendrons indicates poor assimilation of iron in the soil and can lead to premature plant death. While limestone is often the cause, poorly drained soil or deeply planted root ball can also explain the phenomenon.
