Description
Rhododendron ‘Souvenir de J. Broughton’ is a horticultural hybrid of fine stature, with evergreen foliage, prized for its spring clusters of bright pink blossom and its regular vegetation. This hardy and very dense variety creates a beautiful flowering screen at the back of an acidic soil bed. It also adapts well to cultivation in large containers. It is a bush for partial shade and acidic, moist soil.
Belonging to the family Ericaceae, this rhododendron is a large-flowered hybrid. It is sometimes spelled ‘Souvenir de J.Broughton’. This cultivar is among the first great British rhododendrons of the 19th century associated with the Broughton/Highclere line, selected for their increased resistance to harsh winters.
Its habit is bushy, rounded and dense from the base; its growth is fairly rapid for the genus. At 10 years, in open ground, it reaches 1.50 m to 1.70 m in height with a spread of about 1.20 m; in a container, its dimensions remain more modest. The glossy dark green, evergreen leaves are leathery, elliptical and measure 10 to 15 cm long. The hardiness of this rhododendron is rated at −17 °C in suitable soil for a well-established plant.
Flowering takes place from April to May. The inflorescences are large terminal clusters composed of funnel-shaped corollas; the dominant colour is a bright pink, lighter in the centre, with a darker pit in the throat.
Rhododendron ‘Souvenir de J. Broughton’ can be used as a standalone specimen, in a hedge or in a bed, in the company of other ericaceous plants. It can be paired with Chinese azaleas, whose warm tones it complements and tempers, with star magnolias, mountain laurels (Kalmia), red Japanese maples… In a large garden, it could even form a majestic hedge along a grand avenue, alongside other large rhododendrons.

Planting and care
Plant Rhododendron 'Souvenir de J Boughton' in partial shade, sheltered from cold, drying winds, in a cool, humus-bearing, light, acidic soil. Like all ericaceous plants, it does not tolerate calcareous and/or dry soils, nor heavy soils, waterlogged in winter. Dig a hole three times the volume of the pot. Soak the root ball in water (non-calcareous) and plant the bush at collar level, in a mixture composed of 1/4 peat, leaf mould, gravel or pozzolana and topsoil. Water copiously and keep the soil moist in summer.
Azaleas and Rhododendrons have a shallow root system. As a result, they do not cope well with long periods of drought. This is why a soil enriched with humus and abundant watering during dry periods is recommended. Furthermore, this root system is not very strong, which is why it is essential to lighten heavy soils with draining materials (gravel, pozzolana, clay pebbles) at planting time. Apply a mulch of crushed pine bark at the foot of the shrub every spring to keep the soil moist while maintaining an acidic pH.
Maintenance consists of cutting off the faded flowers in summer and cleaning out its dead branches. Azaleas and Rhododendrons can sometimes be attacked by vine weevils, which eat the edges of the leaves and the rootlets, as well as by the famous 'rhododendron leafhopper', which does not often cause severe damage. Yellowing of the leaves (chlorosis) in Rhododendron indicates poor assimilation of iron in the soil and causes premature death of the plant. While lime is frequently the cause, poorly drained soil or a root ball planted too deeply can also explain the condition.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
