Viburnum x burkwoodii 'Conoy' is a compact shrub with a rounded and bushy habit. It boasts small, shiny, dark green, deciduous leaves, pink then white flowers that bloom from April to May, and attractive red fruits in autumn. It has a generous and fragrant flowering, reminiscent of orange blossom. It is highly appreciated for its double interest of beautiful spring flowering and attractive coppery colours in autumn. It is suitable for containers or small gardens due to its slow growth rate. This deciduous bush is very hardy and grows well in any ordinary moist soil, without excessive limestone, in full sun or partial shade.
This variety is the result of a cross-breeding between Viburnum carlesii and V. utile, and reaches a height and spread of 1.5m (5ft). During flowering, the bush carries abundant 10cm (4in) diameter flower clusters at the end of its branches. The pink flowers gradually turn white, creating a subtle gradient of colours that contrasts perfectly with its dark foliage. The flowers are followed by spherical fruits in September-October, which are initially red before turning black when ripe, extending the ornamental interest into winter. Its fruits attract birds. The semi-evergreen foliage takes on coppery hues in autumn.
Hardy up to -20°C (-4°F), Viburnum x burkwoodii 'Conoy' can be used as a standalone plant to attract attention in small gardens, or as a hedge or group planting in larger gardens. Its inflorescences can be used in flower arrangements. Consider planting it in a high-traffic area to fully enjoy its fragrance, such as near a window or a door.

Botanical data
Evergreen down to -20°C (-4°F), Viburnum x burkwoodii 'Conoy' thrives in sunny or semi-shaded locations. Plant it in moist but well-drained soil. Depending on your soil type, adjust its pH with compost as it won't tolerate excessive limestone. During its initial establishment, ensure regular watering (except during freezing periods). Viburnum are sometimes invaded by black bean aphids (Aphis fabae), a parasite that also overwinters on Euonymus and is a vector for Cucumber Mosaic Virus, which causes a serious mosaic disease. The leaves are sometimes ravaged by leaf beetle. Powdery mildew, rot, and leaf spots can also affect them.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
