As soon as I received it, I immediately potted it. I am not despairing, because last year I had already potted some for Christmas, of this variety, and I was not disappointed. You should have seen the number of stems and flowers, and the size of each one, it was impressive... Thank you for your dedicated work, and I will think of you during this festive period when I see these enormous flowers. I wish you the very best possible...

Description

Hippeastrum 'Marilyn' is an indoor bulbous plant with white double flowers. Its flowering in late autumn and late winter is highly sought after.

Originally from South America, hippeastrum (also known as amaryllis), has many cultivars, including 'Marilyn', which is a bulbous plant with long, shiny dark green leaves. The flowering, in large opulent clusters, will occur at the top of a hollow stem 40 to 50cm (16 to 20in) tall during January to May and November to December. Its white double flowers are usually grouped in fours and have a diameter of 16cm (6in).

It is not hardy so should be cultivated in pots or containers to protect it from frost. A sunny exposure is recommended.

Planting and care

You can plant amaryllis bulbs from October to the end of April. Choose a pot that is not too large (one or two cm larger than the size of the bulb). Place a layer of drainage at the bottom. Mix half potting soil, half garden soil. Only bury the bulb halfway. Place the pot in a warm and bright place. Water sparingly until the stem appears. Then water daily. Your bulbs will bloom 6 to 8 weeks later.

If you choose multiple bulbs, plant them with a two-week interval to enjoy their beauty all winter.

After flowering, cut off the faded flowers and let the leaves continue to grow. Continue to water regularly and give them indoor plant fertiliser every 15 days. This is the time when the bulb rebuilds itself to prepare for next year's flowers. After 4 to 6 months, forget about your potted plants, and let them rest for about 3 months in a sheltered place. You can then remove the faded leaves, repot in fresh soil, and start a new growing cycle.
