Description

A duo of woodland with a natural and spontaneous springtime charm. From March to May, the lovely light blue-lilac bell-shaped flowers of the Spanish bluebell will emerge. They will be closely followed by the delicate white umbels of the Bear's garlic, from April to June. Perfect for illuminating shady areas of the garden, this duo naturalises easily, eventually forming a beautiful and low-maintenance hardy groundcover.

This duo consists of:

- 3x Bear's garlic plants: a European species of perennial garlic that grows spontaneously in woodlands. It is also cultivated for its bulb, leaves, and flower buds used as condiments to enhance dishes. It has large narrow deciduous leaves, shiny green. From April to June, it is appreciated for its charming white umbel flowers. Mature height of approximately 20 cm (8in).

- 20x Hyacinthoides hispanica: a botanical species also known as the Spanish bluebell or Spanish squill, native to our woodlands. A perennial bulb that offers a delightful springtime flowering, in the form of trailing bell-shaped flowers, in a light blue-lilac colour with blue anthers. They emerge from a tuft of large strap-shaped leaves, displaying a beautiful fresh and shiny green colour. Flowering height of 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16in).

Plant these bulbs in well-drained, loosened, and humus-rich soil. The results are less favorable in overly moist soils in summer. Choose a location in shade or partial shade in slightly wild areas of the garden, where they can spread freely and eventually form a very attractive ground cover. This duo will be perfect for bordering a shaded pathway, running along a wall supporting a fence grid, or enhancing the ground under a grove of deciduous bushes.

Good to know: Bear's garlic can be harvested over a long period, from January to October. However, don't be too greedy, as it reproduces through its bulbs, so it's important to leave some in place to allow it to multiply. The leaves can be preserved by drying them in a dark and dry place.

Planting and care

Plant your bulbs as soon as possible in a well-drained soil. Loosen the soil deeply. Plant at a depth of 10 cm (4in) (Bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs a few cm apart, making sure they do not touch each other. After flowering, cut the flower stalks and let the leaves dry completely before cutting them.
