Description

Camassia (or camas) leichtlinii Sacajawea is a spring bulb that grows easily and is very decorative even before flowering. In early summer, in May-June, many flowers bloom in spikes. The elegant star-shaped flowers are a lovely ivory-white.

The flowering of this Camassia leichtlinii stands upright on long stems. The deciduous foliage is remarkable for its variegated colour. It consists of long, slender leaves that form a clump from which the floral stems emerge. In summer, the leaves turn yellow and disappear, making way for annuals and perennials that will fill the rest of the season, such as Japanese peonies.

It is a very robust species and very hardy. At maturity, this Camassia can reach a height of 75 cm (30in). It thrives on the edges of ponds as well as in wet meadows. Its name honours a Native American who served as an interpreter for the explorers Lewis and Clark in 1805 during their journey across the United States to the west. It is also a vegetable plant that has an edible bulb eaten by Native American tribes. However, rodents do not particularly enjoy Camassia, which allows the plant to be among the most resistant bulbs, just like daffodils.

For all these good reasons, the height of the floral spikes, the beauty of the foliage, the strength and resistance to moisture, it is one of the most beautiful Camassia.

Planting and care

Place Camassia leichtlinii Sacajawea in shade or sun in a fertile, heavy, humus-rich and well-drained soil like wet meadows. Plant it in autumn at a depth of 10 cm (4in) and space the bulbs 20 cm (8in) apart. Water regularly without saturating the soil. Camassia naturalises very well when left undisturbed. It is drought-resistant. Mulch in winter in regions with harsh winters. Once the flowers have faded, remove the flower stalks, leaving the stem. Also remove the foliage when it turns yellow. Camassia returns each year with increasing vigour and more abundant inflorescences. Aphids and slugs can attack Camassia, but they cause little damage as the plant is very resilient.
