2nd order of these bulbs, the flowering is still just as spectacular, it lasts a long time. No mole in my garden so difficult to say about their effectiveness. I had a field mouse last year, which has disappeared... maybe thanks to these bulbs, I plan to replant them to test their effectiveness on field mice and especially to admire the spectacle of the flowering. The stem is very sturdy, holds up well against the wind. A must-have in one's garden!

Description

Fritillaria imperialis 'Orange Beauty' is a beautiful fritillary with brown floral stems, bearing red-orange flowers veined with brown.

The 'Orange Beauty' fritillary is a bulbous perennial with shiny, linear, green leaves. In spring, it produces a floral stem that can bear up to 5 trailing bell-shaped flowers arranged in a crown. The red-orange flowers are veined with purple, and are black-brown at the base. The sculptural brown stem is topped with a plume of dark green and shiny leaves that echo the foliage at the base.

This fritillary likes moist and very well-drained soils, even poor ones. The bulb emits an unpleasant odour that repels moles but not mice. A gravel bed at planting will partially protect against rodents. Growing in a deep, well-drained pot, kept in a cold greenhouse in winter, is more suitable for rare species.

Fritillaria imperialis 'Orange Beauty' is magnificent in a border with tulips like our 'Carnival of Venice' harmony collection.

Planting and care

Fritillaria imperialis 'Orange Beauty' thrives in full sun. It needs light but not necessarily direct sunlight. It ideally thrives in a continental climate where winters and summers are dry and springs are humid. Plant it in fertile and well-drained soil. Avoid heavy soil to prevent the appearance of fungi. If drainage is insufficient, the fritillary may rot. Plant it from September to October by adding sand, gravel, or volcanic rock to the planting hole. Place the bulb at a depth of 20cm (8in). In winter, we recommend mulching the fritillary. Remove faded flowers if you do not want them to self-seed.
