Description

Muscari White Pearl, discovered in a sowing of Muscari "Peppermint", presents flowers that evolve from pearly white to soft blue at maturity. The nectar-rich, slightly fragrant inflorescence is in the form of a dense and conical cluster that emerges from a tuft of herbaceous foliage in early spring. This small bulbous plant is very hardy and Drought-resistant and has a place in all gardens. A delightful selection, ideal for planting at the base of a hedge, a border or in a lightly mowed meadow where it will naturalise.

Muscari armeniacum 'White Pearl' belongs to the asparagaceae family. This small bulbous plant produces a basal rosette of long, very narrow, light green and vivid leaves. Flowering occurs in March-April depending on the climate. Each rosette produces 3 to 5 floral stems on a mature and well-developed bulb. The 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8in) tall floral stems bear 20 to 40 small urn-shaped flowers, initially pearly white, tightly packed in a compact cluster 8-10 cm (3-4in) high. The pale blue colour appears before the flower fades, starting from the bottom of the spike. After pollination fruits containing numerous round and black seeds that germinate very easily form. The foliage yellows and then dries out some time after flowering, while the bulb enters a dormant state.

Muscari White Pearl is an unassuming but charming plant, versatile and very useful in a garden or for houses without gardens. Its great resistance to cold, drought, and shade allows it to be used in many situations: in the undergrowth, at the base of trees, in borders to emphasize the design of a pathway, in rock gardens alongside heathers, or in Japanese-style gardens. It also grows very well in pots, on a windowsill or balcony. It is so accommodating that it will be ok if you forget to water and thrive in neglected or weekend gardens. Its pastel flowers are very beautiful next to the yellow trumpets of daffodils, forget-me-nots, the fragrant clusters of early blue hyacinths (Blue Pearl, Delft Blue), or the pink and red cups of triumph tulips.

Planting and care

Plant your White Pearl muscari as soon as possible in a well-drained soil. Loosen the soil deeply. Plant at a depth of 8 cm (3in) (Bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil) and spaced 8 cm (3in) apart, making sure they do not touch. Choose a sunny exposure for better flowering. Muscari armeniacum is not demanding in terms of soil type and is perfectly hardy in all regions, even in dry summers. Divide the bulbs every 4 years at most. If you grow it in pots, water regularly and feed after flowering so that the bulb replenishes its reserves.
