Ornithogalum ponticum 'Sochi', also known as Star of Bethlehem although this name is confusing due to its use for several species, is a bulbous perennial much larger than the small ornithogales, often barely taller than the lawn. This rare cultivar, reaching a height of 80 cm, produces dense spikes of white flowers, scattered along sturdy stems above attractive linear foliage. It enhances borders and beds from June onwards and provides stunning long-lasting flowers for vases.
Ornithogalum ponticum is a species of the genus Ornithogalum, which includes about 190 to 217 species and belongs to the family Asparagaceae. Also known as the Pontic Star of Bethlehem, it is a perennial bulb with stems that can reach up to 70 cm to 1 m high. It is native to Europe and Asia and typically inhabits wet meadows and pastures. 'Sochi' is a cultivar originating from forests near Sochi in Russia. It forms clumps of long, thin, grey-green linear leaves that gradually fade as its robust stems bear masses of sparkling star-shaped flowers. They begin to appear at the base of the bud and along the long leading shoots from mid-May, from bottom to top. The flowers consist of 6 white tepals with a green central tongue on the reverse. They open widely and reveal a small yellow heart bordered by stamens. This ornithogalum appreciates well-drained soils that do not retain excessive moisture and sunny or slightly shaded exposures. It tolerates temperatures down to about -10°C.
Ornithogalum ponticum 'Sochi' is a tall bulb compared to the early small ornithogales. Plant your bulbs in full sun or partial shade and remember that they will need a drier environment after flowering and during the dormancy period. 'Sochi' not only makes a statement in your garden beds, it is also a cut flower with astonishing longevity. Cut it just as the first buds begin to open, and it will last for weeks in a vase. Perfect in the middle or front of a warm and sunny bed, a rockery, or a woodland edge, it will reward you for years with its beautiful long-lasting flowers. Mix it with ornamental alliums, camassias, geraniums.

Botanical data
Ornithogalum ponticum Sochi should be placed in a sunny position in fairly fertile and well-drained soil. Do not place it in a damp corner. It is a thermophilic plant, meaning it requires warmth and sunlight while avoiding the scorching rays of the summer sun. However, it can still be grown in light shade. You will need about nine bulbs per square metre. Plant them at a depth of 10 to 15 cm and a distance of about 15 cm. It is a disease and parasite resistant plant.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
