Description
Urginea Maritima, or Sea Squill, is a bulbous perennial that flowers in late summer. From August to October, this species, protected in France and many other countries, offers a multitude of small, star-shaped flowers, 2 to 6mm in diameter, white, striped with green on the outside and pinkish-brown on the inside. The flower buds are pale green with a purple tinge. Its flowers are fragrant and gathered in compact clusters 15 to 35cm long, forming a large, dense spike. They are composed of 6 tepals and 6 stamens.
The flowers are nectar-rich. The flowers stand at the top of a long central stem. This sea onion is nudiflorous, meaning the flowers develop before the leaves. Indeed, the large basal leaves appear in autumn. They are narrow, emerald green speckled with acid green, and measure from 30cm to 1m in length.
The sea squill grows quickly to reach a height of 1.50m at maturity. It is a medium-hardy species native to the Mediterranean. It grows in open ground or in rock gardens. Its flowers can be cut to form beautiful bouquets. Its bulb is very large, measuring 15 cm in diameter.
Handle it with care, as it is a toxic plant.

Urginea Maritima thrives in full sun. This species is perfectly adapted to long periods of drought and tolerates sea spray. Plant the bulbs spaced apart in autumn or spring, incorporating a good amount of sand. Provide a sandy or gritty, poor to medium, well-drained soil. Preferably lime-bearing. During growth, water the young plants once or twice a week. During the dormant period, keep the soil slightly moist. In winter, protect it from damp. Allow the foliage to yellow before removing it. Urginea has no pests or diseases.

It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
