Description

The 'Princess Angelique' Tulip, unavailable in horticultural commerce, is another descendant of the most famous of the double varieties, the tenderly pink 'Angelique'. Its peony-like flower charms with its palette of bolder shades than its big sister. It blushes bright pink on a pale pink background, with the petal edges more colorful than the centre, often marked with a small green area. Its late flowering, in May-June, delightful in the garden as well as in bouquets, beautifully closes the tulip season.

The 'Princess Angelique' Tulip, a sport of the 'Angelique' variety, belongs to the lily family. Originally horticultural, obtained in the Netherlands, it is currently classified in the group of 'Late Double Tulips', whose main characteristic is to have very double and crumpled flowers, lasting, carried by sturdy stems. 'Princess Angelique' is of medium size (40-45cm (16-18in)) and its flower is of a beautiful size, very double and well opened.  It shows  excellent keeping qualities. Its palette of  colours, which evolves a bit over the days, includes pale pink, pale pink and candy pink, up to very bright pink on the edges, with a hint of pale green. The light fragrance adds extra charm, and it is a real favourite, especially when its buds slowly open in a vase, gradually shedding their petals like a rain of pearly petals. The flowering starts relatively late, in May, when other tulips have long faded.

Varied, tender or vibrant colours, opulent and naive flowers, late double tulips bring fantasy and romance to pots or sunny gardens, in the company of the prettiest spring blooms or pastel tulips like 'Apricot Angelique', 'Creme Up Star' and 'Maureen Double' or, on the contrary, dark ones like 'Queen of Night' or 'Cuban Night'. Don't forget to consider the height and flowering period when designing your flowerbeds, as these parameters vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for bouquets, as they last a long time in a vase, and it is there that the fragrant flowers of 'Princess Angelique' will bring the greatest satisfaction.

Planting and care

Place the 'Princess Angelique' tulips in a sunny or partially shaded location from late September to December for spring flowering. Plant the bulbs in a light and well-drained soil, loosened to a depth of 15cm (6in). Space the bulbs 10cm (4in) apart without letting them touch to create a mass effect that will give a more decorative appearance. The care required is very easy. Simply water regularly, especially during dry winters, and trim the flower stalks after flowering. Allow the leaves to completely dry before cutting them.
