Although not all the bulbs lived up to their promises, these classic tulips are rather lovely.

Description

Triumph Tulip 'Kees Nelis' is sought after for its elegance and vivacity. This majestic tulip with a narrow corolla has bicoloured red-orange petals bordered with yellow, which combine beautifully with lilac and orange hues. The flowers stand atop thick and sturdy stems, 40 cm (16in) tall, above the widely lanceolate green deciduous leaves. It blooms in early spring from March.

Tulip 'Kess Nelis' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the Triumph group, whose main characteristic is flowers with a narrow cup shape. They are the result of cross-breeding between early single tulips and Darwin tulips. Triumph tulips are famous for their range of colours and strong and resistant flowers, suitable for flowerbeds and bouquets. They are among the most widely planted varieties.

When designing your flowerbeds, remember to consider the height and flowering period, as these parameters can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is a good idea to plant a few extra bulbs for stunning cut flowers which last a long time in a vase. After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly, so we recommend planting heucheras, tiarellas, brunneras, bleeding hearts, or even euphorbias in the foreground of your flowerbeds. Their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips and elegantly conceal their yellowed leaves.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from October to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly chalky, loose, well-worked soil with good drainage. Do not add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Triumph tulips will thrive in moist to dry soil, in a sunny or partially shaded location. Once flowering is finished, it is best to remove the seed heads to avoid exhausting the plant. Allow the leaves to completely dry before cutting them.
