Description

The Triumph Tulip Ronaldo is a trendy and stylish variety that will add depth to your flowerbeds. This majestic tulip with a narrow corolla offers dark purple-brown petals that beautifully complement shades of pink and orange. The flowers stand atop thick and sturdy stems measuring 40 cm (16in) high above the widely lanceolate green deciduous leaves. It blooms in the heart of spring, starting in April.

The Triumph Tulip Ronaldo belongs to the Liliaceae family. Originally horticultural in origin, it is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, known for its narrow cup-shaped flowers. They are the result of cross-breeding between early single tulips and Darwin tulips. With their wide range of colours, robust and resistant flowers, suitable for both flowerbeds and bouquets, the notoriety of Triumph tulips is well-established. They are already among the most widely planted varieties.

Unmatched for bringing the colours of spring to pots or sunny gardens, don't forget to consider the height and flowering period when designing your flowerbeds, as these parameters can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for cutting, as they make superb cut flowers that last a long time in a vase.

Tulip species are found from Western Europe to China and Japan, including Eastern Europe, Asia Minor, and Central Asia. Their distribution range also includes North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The centre of diversity for the genus is located in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan.

In Europe, there are various wild species of tulips, many of which are endangered. These include large adventive tulips found in cultivated fields, the most well-known being the Agen tulip (Tulipa agenensis), as well as small tulips found in wooded areas or among rocks in the mountains. In cultivation, they are called "wild tulips" or "botanical tulips", with one of the most common being the wild tulip (Tulipa sylvestris), which used to often grow under the protection of vines and whose subspecies australis is known as the Southern tulip.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), spacing them 10 cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly chalky, loose, well-worked, and well-drained. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The Triumph tulip will grow well in moist to dry soil. Plant it in a good, sunny or semi-shady location. After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly and we recommend planting Heucheras, Tiarellas, Brunneras, Bleeding Hearts, Cypress Spurge, at the forefront of your flower beds. Their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips and throughout the season, they will elegantly conceal their yellowed leaves.
