Description

Tulipa 'Prinses Irene' is an old variety that is still in fashion. This sculptural and majestic tulip with a narrow corolla bears orange petals that are streaked with purple, which combine wonderfully with yellows or oranges. The flowers stand atop thick and sturdy stems, reaching a height of 35cm (14in) above the broadly lanceolate green and deciduous leaves. It blooms in the heart of spring, starting in April.

Tulipa 'Prinses Irene' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, whose main characteristic is to present flowers with a narrow cup. They are the result of a cross-breeding between early single tulips and Darwins. Triumph tulips are renowned for their wealth of colours, sturdy and resistant flowers, and suitability for both flower beds and bouquets. They are already among the most planted varieties.

When designing your flower beds, you must consider the height and flowering period of the tulips, as these parameters can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few extra bulbs for bouquets, as they make beautiful long-lasting cut flowers in a vase. After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly, so we recommend planting heuchera, tiarella, brunnera, bleeding heart, or Euphorbia cyparissia at the forefront of your flower beds. Their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips, and will elegantly conceal the tulip's yellowed leaves.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December. Choose a sunny or partially shaded location. Plant in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Plant the bulbs at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The bulbs will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Once flowering is finished, it is wise to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant. Allow the foliage to completely dry before cutting it.
