Description

This mix of Parrot Tulips brings together several varieties with very diverse colours, solid or variegated, in a pastel or flamboyant range. Each flower, of large size, with its petals whose texture resembles the plumage of parrots, attracts all eyes and adds colour to your garden. At home, parrot tulips allow you to create voluptuous and fantastic bouquets, in the manner of Flemish masters. They bloom quite late in spring.

The Parrot Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is classified in Division 10, whose main characteristic is to present huge flowers with twisted, puffy, ruffled, pleated, irregularly fringed petals. They are obtained through mutation (sudden appearance of new characteristics that are maintained in subsequent generations). It is a plant that will reach 40 to 55 cm (16 to 22in) in height when flowering, depending on the varieties. Perched on the stems above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the stunning flowers, with a diameter of at least 15 cm (6in), are all different. The flowering takes place in late April or early May, towards the end of the tulip season. The glaucous green foliage yellows and then dries up a few weeks after flowering. It emerges from the ground in late winter.

A wealth of colours, stunning and variegated flowers, parrot tulips never cease to amaze tulip enthusiasts. In the 18th century, they were called 'monstrous'; this group developed a lot in the 1930s, when it was discovered that irradiating bulbs with X-rays caused this mutation. Sometimes considered too sophisticated to integrate into the garden, they are, on the other hand, among the most popular varieties for making bouquets. Unmatched for bringing fantasy to pots or sunny gardens, do not forget to consider the height and flowering period when designing your flower beds, as these parameters vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for cutting, as they make beautiful cut flowers that last a long time in a vase.

Note: Each batch is unique and the proportion of colours may vary significantly from one batch to another.

Planting and care

Plant Parrot Tulip bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), spacing them 10 cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Tulips will thrive in slightly moist to slightly dry soil in summer. Plant them in a sunny or partially shaded location. Once flowering is complete, it is preferable to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
