Description

Dahlia 'Red Pygmy' is a variety of dwarf semi-cactus dahlia. Its red flowers with tapered petals and lacerated tips bloom from July to October.

This perennial has swollen, tuberous roots. Gathered in vascular bundles, these tubers produce upright, hollow and ramified stems, bearing compound leaves with rounded leaflets. It develops solid, fleshy stems, 60cm (24in) in height. They are topped with ligulate flowers with red, tapered and lacerated ligules at the ends, measuring 13cm (5in) in diameter.

Dahlia 'Red Pygmy' thrives in rich, clayey but well-drained soil that is deeply worked. It prefers a warm and sunny location, sheltered from prevailing winds. It cannot tolerate poor, sandy soils.

Dahlia 'Red Pygmy' is perfect in mixed flower beds. The flowers are also ideal for bouquets.

Tips: when planting, consider the dimensions of the dahlia when planning your beds.

Planting and care

Dahlia 'Red Pygmy' should be planted from mid-April to early May. Plant at a depth of 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in), spaced 60cm (24in) apart. Always provide support stakes and loosely tie the young stems. Apply slow-release compost or organic fertiliser when planting, and liquid fertiliser once a month during the growing season. Water without wetting the foliage. There is no need to remove buds on this variety. Treat against aphids and slugs. Dig up the tubers before the frost arrives, cutting the stems to 15cm (6in) from the stump. Store the tubers in a cool, well-ventilated, dark place that is not too humid. Transplant in early May when the risk of frost has passed.
