Description

The Dahlia pompon 'Deep Impact' is a tall dahlia with spherical heads. The flower heads have a beautiful peach colour on the periphery and a large yellow heart in the centre. This two-tone colouring allows for the creation of bold bouquets, and in the garden, it adds an original touch to a monochromatic composition.

A plant with a thousand faces, dahlias originally from the high plateaus of Mexico now represent around 20,000 horticultural varieties. This tuberous plant was initially cultivated as a root vegetable. But its poor taste qualities quickly gave way to its exuberant flowering. Since then, interest in this very floriferous aster has never waned.

The 'Deep Impact' dahlia will reach a height of 120 cm (47in) and a width of 80 cm (32in). The leaves are divided into 3 or 5 very denticulate leaflets. The stems and leaves are medium green. The plant has a bushy habit. As it is a tall variety, it will be necessary to expand its width to solidify its stature.  The flowers of pompon dahlias form an almost perfect sphere. The 'Deep Impact' heads measure 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6in) in diameter and are fully double. The concave ligules overlap in numerous strongly recurved rows (curved towards the stem) to form a ball. The shorter central florets form a bud, as they have not yet reached maturity.

The flowering of dahlias is exceptionally long. Our variety begins in July and ends in November. To promote flowering and extend this period, remove faded flowers. Even better, regularly cut them to create attractive, tive, colourful bouquets by combining various varieties. In the background of the flower bed, the airy foliage of  bronze fennel and that of diamond grass will enhance the texture of your giant Dahlia varieties. Add a few old gold Hoopesii Helenias to the mix for a refined, romantic picture.

Planting and care

The 'Deep Impact' Dahlia is easy to grow in all regions. For abundant flowering, it is good to follow a few simple rules. Plant the tubers in a sunny location as soon as the last frost has passed. Rich, moist, and well-drained soil is perfect. However, stagnant moisture would promote tuber rot. Feel free to amend the soil with compost and sand if necessary. Work the soil deeply and enrich it, for example, with blood, fish and bone. Place your tuber and crumble the soil well to fill without air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with about 6 cm (2in) of soil. At the end of planting, water once abundantly, then regularly renew this watering during the first six weeks to help with rooting. Dahlias are sensitive to cold, so they need to be overwintered. In November, the first frosts blacken the foliage, which is the time to dig them up. Carefully unearth the tubers and remove as much soil as possible. Let the foliage dry so that the tubers can replenish their reserves. Then cut the stems to 10 cm (4in). Spread your bulbs in a crate on newspaper. Store them away from frost in a dry, cool, dark place like a frost-free garage or attic. In milder regions, where there are only a few days of frost per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In this case, cover the ground with a layer of leaves or straw for protection.
