Description

The Dahlia Cory is a summer bulb from the dwarf Dahlias category. With a compact and bushy habit, it is a very generous and floriferous dahlia that produces beautiful flowers from July until the first frost. These large single flowers are composed of wide flat petals surrounding a center of tiny flowers. The flower is a soft pink colour veined with darker pink and has yellow stamens. It measures 10 cm (4in) in diameter.

The foliage of this Dahlia is deciduous. The bronze-coloured leaves have 3 to 5 ovate leaflets that are rounded at their ends. The leaves are arranged opposite each other. When fully grown, Dahlia Cory can reach a height of 80 cm (32in).

This non-hardy plant originated from Mexico. It was brought to France for its edible roots, but they did not gain any success. It was admired more for its flowers, which were picked to create lovely fresh bouquets. Neglected for some time, it is now making a comeback in low flower beds. It can also be found in borders, flower beds, as well as in potted plants and hanging baskets on balconies, terraces, and window sills. It can be grown as a standalone plant. This Dahlia is commonly found in vegetable gardens and can be combined with other bulbous plants, whether they are perennials or annuals.

Planting and care

The Cory Dahlia thrives in sunny spots in your garden. Place it in a soil of ordinary type, rich in humus, sandy, fairly fertile and well-drained. Plant the bulbs at a depth of 5 cm (2in), spaced 40 cm (16in) apart. Planting should take place after the last frost, from May to June. Easy to grow, provide a nitrogen-rich fertilizer until the end of June, then a potassium-rich fertilizer from July to October. These fertilizations should be done once a week and will help extend the flowering period. After planting, water regularly at the base, preferably in the evening, avoiding wetting the foliage. Watering is essential during hot periods. Regularly remove faded flowers. After flowering, store the bulbs in a dry and well-ventilated place, preferably in sand and protected from rodents. A cellar is an ideal location. Before storing them, leave some leaves in place so that the bulb can replenish its nutrient reserves and wait for these leaves to turn yellow. You can replant them in the spring.
