Description

The Dahlia 'Gallery Art Deco' is a variety of dwarf dahlia with orange flowers and carmine petal reverses that blooms from July to October.

This perennial has swollen tuberculous roots. Gathered in bundles, these tubers produce upright, hollow and ramified stems, bearing compound, odd-pinnate leaves with rounded leaflets. Strong, fleshy stems, 40 cm (16in) tall, are topped with 11cm (4in) diameter orange flowers.

The Dahlia 'Gallery Art Deco' thrives in rich, clayey but healthy soil, worked deeply in warm and sunny positions, sheltered from prevailing winds. It languishes in poor, sandy soils.

The Dahlia 'Gallery Art Deco' is used in mixed borders with other varieties or for making bouquets.

Tips: When planting, take into account the dimensions for the composition of your borders.

Planting and care

The Dahlia 'Gallery Art Deco' should be planted from mid-April to early May, at a depth of 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) and with a spacing of 60cm (24in). Always use stakes and loosely tie the young stems. Apply slow-release compost or organic fertilizer during planting, and liquid fertilizer monthly during the growing season. Water without wetting the foliage. There is no need to remove buds on this variety. Treat against aphids and slugs. Dig up the tubers before the frost, cutting the stems to 15cm (6in) from the stump. Store them in darkness in a cool, well-ventilated place that is not too damp. Transplant in early May when frost is no longer a concern.
