Description

The Dahlia 'Mingus Alex' is a variety of Giant Dahlia. The flowers, with their velvety petals, are a beautiful blood red with a burgundy center, and they bloom from July to October.

This perennial has swollen, tuberous roots. These tubers, grouped together, produce upright, hollow, and branched stems, carrying compound leaves with rounded leaflets. Sturdy, fleshy stems, 1m (3ft) tall, are topped with white-ivory, round, and clustered ligulate flowers, measuring 20cm (8in) in diameter.

The Dahlia 'Mingus Alex' thrives in rich, clayey but well-drained soil, deeply worked in a warm and sunny location, sheltered from prevailing winds. It languishes in poor, sandy soils.

The Dahlia 'Mingus Alex' is used in mixed flowerbeds or for making bouquets.

Tips: When planting, consider the dimensions for the composition of your flowerbeds.

Planting and care

The Dahlia 'Mingus Alex' should be planted from mid-April to early May at a depth of 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) and with a spacing of 60cm (24in). Always use stakes and loosely tie the young stems. Apply slow-release compost or organic fertilizer during planting and liquid fertilizer once a month during growth. Water without wetting the foliage. There is no need to remove buds on this variety. Treat against aphids and slugs. Dig up the tubers before the frost, cutting the stems to 15cm (6in) above the stump. Store them in a cool, well-ventilated, and not overly humid place. Transplant them in early May when the risk of frost has passed.
