Description

The Dahlia 'Willie Willie' is a variety of Honka dahlia. The flowers with tapering and incurved petals along their entire length are pale fuchsia pink on the outside and white on the inside. They bloom from July to October.

This perennial has tubercular roots, swollen. Gathered in bundles, these tubers produce upright, hollow and ramified stems, bearing compound leaves with rounded odd-pinnate leaflets. Solid, fleshy stems, 70 cm (28in) high, are topped with star-shaped flowers, with ligulate petals in pale fuchsia pink and white, measuring 10 cm (4in) in diameter.

The Dahlia 'Willie Willie' grows well in rich, clayey but healthy soil, deeply worked in warm and sunny conditions, sheltered from prevailing winds. It languishes in poor, sandy soils.

The Dahlia 'Willie Willie' is used in mixed flower beds with other varieties or for making bouquets.

Tips: When planting, take into account the dimensions for the composition of your flower beds.

Planting and care

The Dahlia 'Willie Willie' should be planted from mid-April to early May, at a depth of 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) and with a spacing of 60cm (24in). Always provide support stakes and loosely tie the young stems. Add slow-release compost or organic fertilizer during planting, and liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season. Water without wetting the foliage. There is no need to remove buds on this variety. Treat against aphids and slugs. Dig up the tubers before the frost, cutting the stems to 15cm (6in) from the stump. Store them in a cool, well-ventilated, dark place that is not too humid. Transplant in early May when the risk of frost has passed.
