Description

The Decorative Dahlia 'Antibes' is a decorative Dahlia with a captivating reddish-brown colour and a yellow heart.

This generous Dahlia has abundant flowering from July to the first frost. Its double ball-shaped flowers measure over 12 cm (5in) in diameter. Its flowers can be used to create beautiful bouquets.

This is a tall Dahlia that can reach a height of 1.20 m (4ft). It brings life to beds of large perennials in late summer. Combine it with grasses and echinaceas.

This non-hardy plant originates from Mexico. It was grown for its edible roots, which were not successful. It was admired more for its flowers, which were picked to make charming fresh bouquets.

Planting and care

Dahlia 'Antibes' appreciates sunny spots in your garden. Place it in ordinary soil, rich in humus, sandy, fairly fertile, and well-drained. Plant the bulbs at a depth of 10 cm (4in), spaced 40 cm (16in) apart. Planting should take place after the last frost, from May to June. You can provide a nitrogen-rich fertiliser until the end of June, then a potassium-rich fertiliser from July until October. These additions should be made once a week and will help extend the flowering period. After planting, water regularly at the base, preferably in the evening, avoiding wetting the foliage. Watering is essential during hot periods. Regularly remove faded flowers. After flowering, bring the bulbs indoors to a dry and well-ventilated place, preferably in sand and protected from rodents. A cellar is an ideal location. Before bringing them indoors, leave some leaves in place so that the bulb can replenish its nutrient reserves and wait for the leaves to turn yellow. You can replant them in the spring.
