Dahlia Golden Emblem

Dahlia Golden Emblem stands out for the very pure colour of its double flowers. Of a beautiful size, they display a solid and bright golden yellow colour, easy to match with many other flowers. This variety, of medium size, blooms from July to October, allowing for the creation of very beautiful monochrome or alternatively variegated and full of fantasy flower beds, associated with blue, orange, and red blooms. Compose with its ideally shaped flowers in elegant bouquets, even late in the season.

Dahlias are tuberous plants from the large aster family, originally from the high plateaus of Mexico. At present, the approximately 25,000 horticultural varieties obtained by humans have arrived, to our great pleasure, in gardens all over the world. Dahlias are classified according to the shape of their flowers. 'Golden Emblem' is classified in the category of Decorative Dahlias. In this group, the coloured ligules of the capitulum are arranged regularly in a spiral, they can be curved towards the stem or fringed, for example. In this variety, the capitula measure 15 to 17 cm (6 to 7in) in diameter and their ligules are flat and wide, oval, slightly incurved, of a pure yellow colour, with the yellow colour being slightly more intense towards the centre of the flower. Flowering takes place from July to October. The plant will reach approximately 90 cm (35in) in height, and 50 to 60 cm (20 to 24in) in width, with a bushy and upright habit. The highly branched stems are hollow and the leaves are opposite, pinnately compound, meaning they are divided into 3 or 5 leaflets, which have very denticulate lobes. The leaves and stems are a fairly dark green colour.

To promote reblooming and extend the flowering period, make sure to remove faded flowers. Even better, regularly create attractive colourful bouquets by combining various varieties. The medium height of this variety makes it suitable for ornamenting flower beds with various plants, to structure an ensemble composed of flowering shrubs (Cotinus, Compact Winged Euonymus, Loropetalum) and lower perennials (Daylilies, Asters, Gauras). The flowering of Echinaceas pairs perfectly with that of Dahlias, they occur simultaneously, as well as the flowering of perennial salvias for example. Also consider grasses (Miscanthus saccharifolius, Stipa arundinacea, Eragrostis trichodes) which take on beautiful colours in autumn.

As the star plant of ornamental gardens, Dahlias are undoubtedly beautiful flowers, they are impeccable in a flower bed but can also enhance a vegetable garden. In Mexico, this tuberous plant was first cultivated as a root vegetable for consumption. Its poor taste qualities quickly assigned it the rank of an ornamental plant. Since then, the interest in their beautiful exuberance has never waned.
