More information

The flowers of this Dahlia are very double, not very large, around 10 cm in diameter, but very voluminous and display, from the first day of flowering, a bold trio of colours in red, yellow, and white. Each flower interprets the distribution of colours differently within a sumptuously colourful bouquet. Variety of medium stature, excellent in the middle of a border. Superb also in bouquets.

Description

The Decorative Dahlia 'Short Track' is a variety that produces voluminous flowers, not very large, formed of numerous ligules in three tones of bold red, icy white, and sunny yellow. The flowers are variable, but display the 3 colours from the opening. This medium-statured variety is a very floriferous plant, standing out in the middle of borders. Also superb in bouquets.

Dahlias belong to the large family of asteraceae, originally from the high plateaus of Mexico. Currently, the approximately 25,000 horticultural varieties created by humans have invaded, to our great pleasure, gardens worldwide. Varieties of Dahlias are classified according to the shape of their heads. 'Short Track' is a Dahlia from the decorative group. The inflorescences are composed of several rows of almost flat, long and flexible outer ligules, slightly incurved and curved towards the neck. The heads measure 9-11 cm in diameter. The juxtaposition of different colours transforms the plant into a fascinating bouquet. The plant reaches about 70 cm to 1 m in height and 50-60 cm in width, with a bushy habit. Its leaves, with a smooth texture, are divided into very denticulate lobes. The flowering of this variety begins in July and ends in October, if care is taken to remove faded flowers or frequently make bouquets.

Today essential in gardens, Dahlias were initially cultivated in Mexico as a vegetable-root. Their poor taste qualities quickly relegated them to the status of ornamental plants, but they are still welcome in the vegetable garden to bring a little colour among the vegetables and supply the cutting flower reserve. 'Short Track', with small flowers but strong personality, is enhanced by a setting of grasses (Stipa, Pennisetum, Foxtail Barley, Carex...) or panicle phlox and white, yellow, or red cosmos. It could also be paired with bush roses, in a colour harmony.

Planting and care

The Dahlia 'Short Track' is easy to grow in all regions. For abundant flowering, it is good to follow a few simple rules, plant the tubers in a sunny location as soon as the last frosts have passed, rich, fresh, and well-drained soils are perfect. However, stagnant moisture would promote tuber rot. Do not hesitate to amend the soil with compost and sand if necessary. Work the soil deeply and enrich it with crushed horn or dehydrated blood for example. Place your tuber and crumble the soil well to fill without air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with about 6 cm of soil. At the end of planting, water once abundantly and then repeat this watering regularly during the first 6 weeks to help with rooting. Stake tall varieties that may bend under rain and wind.

Dahlias are sensitive to cold, they need to be overwintered. In November, the first frosts blacken the foliage, it is time to dig them up. Carefully unearth the tubers. Remove as much soil as possible. Let the foliage dry so the tubers can replenish their reserves. Then cut the stems to 10 cm. Spread your bulbs in a crate on a newspaper. Store them frost-free in a dry, cool, dark place, such as a frost-free garage or attic for example. In Southern regions, close to the coast, experiencing few frosty days per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In this case, simply cover the ground with a carpet of leaves or straw for protection.

This tall Dahlia, with its hollow stems, does not withstand wind or heavy rains well. To overcome this drawback, you can stake it, but let's agree, it's not very aesthetic. However, by pinching the stems early or removing axillary flower buds, you will spread out the plant's habit which will offer more resistance to bad weather. At the same time, you channel the flow of sap onto a single flower that will become larger and sturdier.
