More information

The flowers of this Dahlia are very large, measuring 20 to 25 cm in diameter, double, with a relaxed style, with the twisted petals gathered in a slightly loose manner. They are white, tinted and speckled with pink and violet. Each flower interprets the color distribution in a different way within a sumptuously colourful bouquet. Also superb in arrangements.

Description

The 'Taiheiyo' Decorative Dahlia offers very large flowers of the "dinnerplate" type, 20 to 25 cm in size. With a strong personality, they are composed of white ligules more or less twisted, gathered rather loosely, tinted or speckled with shades of pink and violet. Each flower interprets the distribution of colours in a different way within a sumptuously colourful bouquet. This fairly tall variety is very floriferous. Also superb in bouquets.

Dahlias belong to the large family of asteraceae, originally from the high plateaus of Mexico. Currently, the some 25,000 horticultural varieties created by humans have invaded, to our great pleasure, gardens worldwide. Dahlias are classified according to the shape of their heads. 'Taiheiyo' is a Dahlia from the decorative group with large flowers. The inflorescences are composed of several rows of long and flexible outer ligules, more or less twisted. The heads are opulent and measure up to 25 cm in diameter. The juxtaposition of all these bicolour flowers transforms the plant into a fascinating bouquet. The plant reaches approximately 85 cm to 1 m in height and 50 to 60 cm in width, with a bushy habit. Its leaves, with a smooth texture, are divided into very denticulate lobes. The flowering of this variety begins in July and ends in October, if care is taken to remove faded flowers or to make bouquets frequently.

Today, essential in gardens, Dahlias were initially cultivated in Mexico as a root vegetable. Their poor taste quickly relegated them to the status of ornamental plants, but they are still welcome in the vegetable garden to bring some colour among the vegetables and supply a reserve of cut flowers. 'Taiheiyo', with its strong personality, can be used alone, or enhanced by a setting of grasses (Stipa, Pennisetum, Foxtail Barley, Carex...) or panicle phlox and white, pink, or red cosmos. It could also be combined with bush roses, in colour harmony.

Planting and care

The Dahlia 'Taiheiyo’ is easy to grow in all regions. For abundant flowering, it is good to follow a few simple rules, plant the tubers in a sunny location from the last frosts, rich, fresh, and well-drained soils are perfect. However, stagnant moisture would promote tuber rot. Feel free to amend the soil with compost and sand if needed. Work the soil deeply and enrich it, for example with crushed horn or dehydrated blood. Place your tuber and crumble the soil well to fill without air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with about 6 cm of soil. At the end of planting, water generously once and then repeat this watering regularly during the first 6 weeks to aid rooting. Stake tall varieties that may lean over in rain and wind.

Dahlias are sensitive to cold, they need to be overwintered. In November, the first frosts blacken the foliage, it's time to dig them up. Carefully dig up the tubers. Remove as much soil as possible. Let the foliage dry so the tubers can replenish their reserves. Then cut the stems to 10 cm. Spread your bulbs in a crate on newspaper. Store them protected from frost in a dry, cool, dark place, such as a frost-free garage or attic for example. In the southern regions, close to the coast, experiencing few frosty days per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In this case, simply cover the ground with a layer of leaves or straw for protection.

This tall Dahlia, with its hollow stems, does not withstand wind or heavy rain well. To overcome this drawback, you can stake it, but let's agree, it's not very aesthetic. However, by pinching the stems early or removing the axial flower buds, you will spread out the plant's habit, offering more resistance to bad weather. At the same time, you are channeling the flow of sap to a single flower that will become larger and sturdier.
