Description

The 'Trustfull' Small-Flowered Decorative Dahlia is a relatively modest-sized variety that produces gorgeous double flowers in summer, round in shape, with a pink infused with orange and variably tinged with white at the tips. Perfect for cut flowers, it also excels in borders and beds, enhancing them with its bright, colourful flowers from July until the first frosts.

The Dahlias are tuberous plants belonging to the large Asteraceae family, originally from the high plateaus of Mexico. Nowadays, the thousands of horticultural varieties created by humans have spread, much to our delight, to gardens worldwide. Dahlias are classified based on the shape of their flowers. 'Trustfull' is categorised as a Decorative Dahlia, specifically a Small-Flowered Decorative Dahlia. In this group, the colourful ligules of the flower head are arranged regularly in a spiral, they can be curved towards the stem or even fringed, for example. In this variety, the flower heads measure 10-11 cm in diameter, and their ligules are oval, rounded, and flat. Flowering occurs from July to October-November. The plant will reach an average height of 70 cm and a width of 40 cm, with a bushy and erect habit. The highly branched stems are hollow, and the leaves are opposite, pinnately divided, meaning they are subdivided into 3 or 5 leaflets, which form very denticulate lobes. The leaves and stems are of a fairly light green colour.

To encourage repeat flowering and extend the blooming period, be sure to deadhead the flowers. Better yet, create attractive colourful bouquets by combining different varieties. Decorative Dahlias pair well with gauras and cleomes to lighten their generous silhouette. 'Trustfull' flowers also make wonderful bouquets, especially with grasses. This variety's medium size makes it ideal for the centre of mixed borders, providing structure among shrubs with foliage and shorter plants. The flowering of Echinaceas complements that of Dahlias perfectly, blooming simultaneously, as well as that of perennial salvias, for instance.

A star plant in cottage gardens, Dahlias are undoubtedly beautiful flowers, perfect for flower beds, but they can also enhance vegetable gardens. In Mexico, this tuberous plant was initially grown as a root vegetable for consumption. Its poor taste quickly relegated it to the status of an ornamental plant. Since then, the interest in their beautiful exuberance has never waned.

Planting and care

The Dahlia Trustfull is easy to grow in all regions. For a generous flowering, it is good to follow a few simple rules, plant the tubers in a sunny position after the last frosts, rich, fresh and well-drained soils are perfect. However, stagnant moisture would promote tuber rot. Feel free to amend the soil with compost and sand if necessary. Work the soil deeply and enrich it, for example, with crushed horn or dehydrated blood. Place your tuber and crumble the soil well to fill without air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with around 6 cm of soil. At the end of planting, water abundantly once and then renew this watering regularly during the first 6 weeks to help with root development.

Dahlias are sensitive to cold, they need to be overwintered. In November, the first frosts blacken the foliage, it's time to dig them up. Carefully unearth the tubers. Remove as much soil as possible. Let the foliage dry so the tubers can rebuild their reserves. Then cut the stems to 10 cm. Spread your bulbs in a crate on a newspaper. Store them away from frost in a dry, cool, dark place, like a frost-free garage or attic for example. In southern regions, close to the coast, experiencing few frosty days per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In this case, simply cover the ground with a layer of leaves or straw for protection.

This tall Dahlia, with its hollow stems, is still sensitive to strong winds or heavy rains. To overcome this drawback, you can stake it, but let's agree, it's not very aesthetic. On the other hand, by pinching the stems early or removing the axial flower buds, you will spread out the plant's habit which will offer more resistance to bad weather. At the same time, you are directing the flow of sap to a single flower that will become larger and sturdier.
