The Tuberose, in Latin Polianthes, is a perennial plant with a bulbous rhizome celebrated worldwide for the intoxicating fragrance of its flowers. The most familiar one to us is the Polianthes tuberosa used by perfume makers, especially its beautiful 'The Pearl' (La Perle) variety, with double flowers of a deliciously scented ivory white. The thirteen species of tuberoses that make up the genus Polianthes belong to the botanic family of Asparagaceae or Agavaceae, distant relatives of agaves and asparagus. Most of these plants are native to Mexico, and they are sensitive to frost as well as drought. Horticultural breeding has given rise to some lovely varieties with single or double flowering, in pink ('Sensation'), yellow or white. Tuberose plants grow in clumps of basal leaves topped in summer with tall flower stalks adorned with tubular flowers that open like stars. They appreciate sunlight and warmth, and light, fertile soil that remains cool throughout their growth and flowering period. It will be necessary to protect them from frost in winter, as well as excessive moisture.

You'll adore them!
