The Incarvilleas or Incarvillea are rhizomatous perennials known for repelling moles. Originating from China, these plants form dark green, deeply cut leaf rosettes that are 30cm (12in) long and bear tubular flowers from May to July. The flowers are pink or white with yellow throats, and arranged in clusters of 5 to 10. Also known as "Abbé Delavay's Incarvilleas", they thrive in rich, well-drained soils that are moist and either sunny or partially shaded. Organic matter should be added at planting and mulching is necessary to keep the soil cool in summer and protect the stump in winter. Incarvilleas are used in mass plantings with evergreen bushes or in pots on balconies.

Tip: Since the leaves fall early, plant them among perennial evergreens like heucheras.
