Description

The Delavay's Hardy Gloxinia ‘Deli Rose’ (Incarvillea delavayi) is an elegant and hardy perennial plant, appreciated for its large, bright pink flowers with yellow throats, which appear in early summer. Perfectly suited for rock gardens or flower beds, it attracts pollinators while adding a pleasant touch of exoticism and colour.

Delavay's Hardy Gloxinia belongs to the Bignonia family and is a botanical species native to the mountainous regions of Sichuan and Yunnan in China. The 'Deli Rose' cultivar was selected for its larger and more colourful flowers. A perennial with a tuberous stump, this plant with an upright habit reaches a height of 50 to 60 cm. Its basal, finely cut leaves resemble those of ferns. They can reach about 30 to 40 cm in length and are often arranged in a rosette at the base of the plant. The 7 to 9 cm long flowers are trumpet-shaped and flared. Bright pink in colour, the flowers have a yellow throat that attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies. The flowering period extends from June to July. Delavay's Hardy Gloxinia thrives in well-drained, yet moist, humus-bearing, sandy, or rocky soil, in a sunny or partially shaded exposure. It tolerates cold winters well, resisting down to -15°C if the soil remains dry. The foliage of Delavay's Hardy Gloxinia is deciduous, meaning it disappears in winter before regrowing in spring.

The 'Deli Rose' Gloxinia fits well in a slightly damp rock garden, bordering a flower bed, or in large pots on a terrace. It pairs nicely with columbines, peach-leaved bellflowers, and rock cresses, for example.

Planting and care

The seeds of Delavay's Incarvillea 'Deli Rose' can be sown indoors at the end of winter (February-March) or directly in the ground in spring, after the last frosts. For indoor sowing, place the seeds in a mix of light compost and sand, keep the substrate slightly moist, and keep the seedlings at a temperature of around 15-18°C. Germination usually takes between 3 and 4 weeks. Once the young plants have 2 to 3 leaves, transplant them into individual pots before planting them in the ground in spring.

In-ground cultivation:

Delavay's Incarvillea thrives in well-drained, light soil rich in organic matter, and with a sunny to semi-shady exposure. It tolerates slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 6-7). When planting, make sure the soil is well-drained, adding sand or gravel if necessary, as the plant is sensitive to stagnant moisture, especially in winter. Water moderately during the growing season (spring-summer) and reduce watering in autumn and winter. Mulching the soil in autumn can protect the roots from intense cold.

Pot cultivation:
For pot cultivation, choose a deep container to accommodate its taproot. Use a mix of compost and sand to ensure good drainage. Place the pot in a well-lit area, ideally exposed to morning sun and protected from strong afternoon heat. In a pot, the plant requires more regular watering, but without excess water, and adding diluted liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season will promote abundant flowering. In winter, reduce watering and place the pot in a sheltered area if temperatures drop below -10°C.
