Nerines are beautiful bulbous flowers appreciated for their very late flowering in pink, white or red, but they are sensitive to cold. Originating from South Africa, these plants form a rigid flowering stem that reaches a height of 40 to 60cm (16 to 24in), which bears an umbel of about ten flowers with narrow petals, curled in undulate ribbon shapes. The elongated foliage appears after flowering and persists throughout winter, then dries up in spring. In April, Nerines are planted in sandy, well-drained soil, even poor soil, in a sunny and warm location. In August, the bulbs can be planted in pots indoors. Mulch in winter to protect against cold and excess moisture. Stop watering once the leaves turn yellow to respect the summer dormancy. Also known as Bowden's Nerines, they are used in groups at the base of a south-facing wall or in a flowerbed. They can also be grown in pots, planters, bouquets, or forced indoors. Tip: Wait for 4 years before dividing the clumps in April.
