Description

Purple Basil is a 30 cm (12in) tall herbaceous condiment plant. It is a variety with purple leaves and a compact habit, ideal for pots. It is cultivated for its oval leaves with a penetrating fragrance that can be consumed raw. Sowing period is from March to April for a harvest 3 months later.

Originating from tropical regions of Asia and Africa, basil forms a plant that reaches, depending on the varieties, between 30 and 50 cm (12 and 20in) in height. It has upright, branching stems with a square section like most Lamiaceae. It is an aromatic plant whose leaves, fresh or dried, are widely used in salads, marinades, or in pesto to accompany pasta, meat, or fish.

The use of basil in the Mediterranean basin dates back to Antiquity. In Roman times, this plant was the emblem of lovers, while in Greek culture, it symbolised hatred and misfortune! Basil is a condiment plant used to flavor and enhance dishes. Rich in essential oil, basil has soothing, anti-inflammatory, and stimulating properties.

Basil will require a supply of well-decomposed compost (3 kg/m²) in late autumn or early spring.

Harvest: Between July and October, basil is harvested as needed and as it develops.

Storage: Basil can be stored for a few days in a cool place in a glass filled with water. It can be dried in the shade and stored in an airtight jar, but unfortunately, it loses some of its fragrance.

Gardener's tip: Regular weeding and hoeing should be done. Pinch the flowering stems to encourage new shoots to develop. The smell of its leaves repels mosquitoes.

Planting and care

Sowing and maintenance:

Basil likes a damp and loose soil, rich in humus. This plant also needs semi-shaded exposure to develop well. Basil dislikes direct sunlight as it tends to burn the leaves. Basil is a plant that is installed in the vegetable garden, but it adapts very well in a pot on a patio or on a balcony.

Sowing: should take place in spring, in the months of March, April and May, directly in place. Practice a well-aerated sowing in a flat furrow about 10 cm (4in) wide and 2 cm (1in) deep. The rows should be 25 cm (10in) apart. Cover the seeds with the soil spread along the furrow, then water. Germination takes between 10 to 15 days. As soon as the first plants appear, a light thinning is carried out. The more staggered the sowing, the longer the harvesting period will be. Sowing can be done in a bucket to be replanted as soon as the plant reaches 10 cm (4 to 6 leaves) in height. Basil can be kept in a pot to be available in the kitchen if it is bright.

Maintenance: Basil requires simple watering (or preventive mulching) when the soil dries out. It is the lack of water (water stress) that can cause basil to go to seed. Pinch off the inflorescences as soon as they appear to promote leaf production. Basil is sensitive to powdery mildew, gray rot, and aphids. To combat rot and powdery mildew, reduce watering and thin out the planting. To control aphids, you can treat the plants with a mixture of water and olive oil.
