Description

The Mesophylla 'Blauwe Groninger' is a spring variety grown tightly packed to consume its leaves at the young shoot stage. Like the Turnip Cabbage, this vegetable plant is delicate and rich in vitamins. It is sown under cover from November to February or in open ground from March to May for a harvest from February to July.

Harvest: Cut the leaves at ground level when the plants are about 20 cm (8in) high.

Storage: the leaves can be stored in the bottom of the refrigerator for a few days.

Gardener's tip: To limit watering, we recommend that when the plants are well developed, you mulch the soil with thin successive layers of clippings, if possible, mixed with dead leaves. This protection, which keeps the soil moist, reduces weeding and acts as thermal protection against the coldest temperatures.

Planting and care

Sowing :

The germination temperature of the Mesophylla Blauwe Groninger is around 12° and takes about 14 days.

Sowing period: under cover from November to February or in open ground from March to May

Harvest period: from February to July

You can sow directly in place or prepare seedlings that will then be planted in their final position in the garden.

Preparing seedlings: Under cover or in a cold greenhouse in the garden for the rest of the year (according to the recommended sowing period), sow the seeds to a depth of 1 to 2 cm (0 to 1in) in a good seed compost or fine soil. Cover lightly with compost, and keep the substrate moist but not soggy.

When the young plants appear strong enough to handle, transplant them into pots if necessary before planting them in the garden when there is no longer any risk of frost. When planting, respect the recommended spacing for direct sowing.

Direct sowing: In well-amended and finely worked soil, make furrows one or two centimetres deep, spaced 10 centimetres (4 inches) apart. Sow the seeds and cover them with a thin layer of fine soil. When the seedlings are well developed, thin them out if necessary, keeping only one plant every 10 centimetres (4 inches).

Cultivation :

The Mesophylla 'Blauwe Groninger' is grown in the sun. It is a fairly demanding vegetable that requires well-rotted soil. It is advisable to make a good compost addition (about 3/4 kg per m2) a few months before, by digging to a depth of 5 cm (2in), after having, as for all vegetable crops, thoroughly loosened the soil.
