This Seed Mix for Bees is a selection of perennial and annual plants chosen for their ability to attract and nourish bees. Easy to grow in ordinary soil and requiring very little maintenance, they can be sown directly in place in spring or even in autumn in mild climates, in a sunny spot, in well-prepared and loosened soil. Their flowering periods range from spring to the end of summer, providing an abundant food source for pollinators. The flowerbed will bloom for at least two years and provide a refuge for biodiversity. Some plants will self-seed wherever they please.
This selection consists of 27 varieties, including borage (Borago officinalis), cornflower (Centaurea cyanus), cultivated coriander (Coriandrum sativum), bipinnate cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus) and sulphur cosmos (Cosmos sulphureus), Chinese forget-me-not (Cynoglossum amabile), purple viper's bugloss (Echium plantagineum), buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum), annual sunflower (Helianthus annuus), bird's-foot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), and phacelia (Phacelia tanacetifolia). All these plants exhibit rapid growth and easily naturalise through self-seeding in ordinary, well-drained soil. A packet of seeds covers approximately 3 square metres. The plants vary in height from 30cm (12in) to over 1m (3ft).
It has become very popular to sow flower meadows. This beautiful alternative to a lawn blooms throughout the entire summer season while requiring very little maintenance. Watering if the weather is extremely dry and mowing to a height of 10 cm (4in) in autumn will suffice. Ideal for adding colour and life to a slightly wild and sunny area of the garden, whether in flowerbeds or grassy areas, this mix also helps attract bees to fruit trees, promoting pollination and fruit production. Invite nature into your garden: sow our flower mixes alongside pathways, on slopes bordering a sunken path, or at the back of a garden bordering the countryside.

Sowing:
Sow directly in place from March to early June, once the soil has warmed up, in well-prepared soil that is raked and free from weeds. Sow finely on the surface of the soil and lightly rake to cover the seeds. Alternatively, sow at a depth of 1.5 mm (0in) in furrows spaced 30 cm (12in) apart. Germination normally takes 14 to 30 days.
Cultivation:
When the young plants appear, water well and remove weeds. In autumn, at the end of flowering, seeds can be collected and sown elsewhere. Water well to make the seeds adhere to the soil. Prune or mow to 10 cm (4in) at the end of flowering.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
