Description

Panicum elegans 'Sprinkles' is a must-have for cut flower gardens and bouquets. This ornamental grass boasts narrow, flat, and upright blue-green foliage and pale-green paniculate flowering, on thin hair-like spikes, resembling fireworks. A wonderful short-lived perennial to grow as an annual, it thrives in sunny and well-drained soil, but can adapt to various conditions. It fits well in all types of gardens, from wild to romantic, and blends seamlessly in contemporary styles. Sow it for a quick harvest and use in bouquets.

Panicum elegans or Agrostis nebulosa is a short-lived herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the Poaceae family, like many grasses. This plant grows in clumps of bluish-green narrow and flat leaves, forming a fountain shape. When mature, it reaches a height of 75cm (30in). In summer, long pale-green inflorescences appear in thin spikelets, resembling fireworks. Seeds are formed at the end of summer on the spikes. They are dispersed by the wind and ensure the species' survival in gardens and in nature.

Panicum elegans 'Sprinkles' ideally thrives in moist and well-drained soil that is not too rich. This grass is appreciated for its attractive decorative inflorescences. It complements perennial and annual flowers that are floriferous and light, such as toadflaxes, penstemons, field daisies, Aster cordifolius, and scabious, as well as annual poppies and Damask nigellas. Plant it alongside other beautiful cut flowers to create lovely bouquets. Also consider pairing it with Briza media for the grace of its spikelets in floral compositions.

Planting and care

Sow Panicum elegans from February to May in trays or pots filled with a good seed compost. Place your seeds in a mini-greenhouse or in a heated room at an optimal temperature of 15 to 18°C (59 to 64.4°F). Simply cover the seeds with a little compost. Germination can be slow. You can enclose your seeds in a plastic bag that you will keep at 15 to 18°C (59 to 64.4°F) for 2 weeks, which should be the germination period.

Transplant the young plants when they are large enough to handle. Place them in individual pots with a diameter of 7.5cm (3in). Acclimatise the young plants to the outdoors before transplanting them, either in the ground or in pots, keeping a distance of 45 to 60cm (18 to 24in) between each one. Plant out when the risk of frost has passed.

Sowing from February to May allows for a harvest from July to September.

Cultivation:

Plant Panicum elegans in full sun, in moist and well-drained soil. A beautiful plant that thrives easily, without any problems or maintenance.
