The Red Dragon Wing Begonia is a remarkable annual plant, constantly adorned with vivid red flowers. Its generous clusters of single flowers rest on robust, wing-shaped, shiny green leaves. This bushy and dynamic variety adds a touch of exoticism in pots or large hanging baskets. It thrives in intense heat and full sun, although it flourishes even more in partially shaded areas.
The Red Dragon Wing Begonia is a non-hardy herbaceous perennial plant, grown as an annual, belonging to the begonia family. It originates from Begonia semperflorens, a hybrid between two species native to Brazil. This variety is part of a series of sterile hybrids obtained in 1997, selected for their good sun and heat resistance, vigour, and sensational foliage. The Red Dragon Wing has tender, fleshy stems covered with thick, leathery, oblong and heart-shaped, beautiful dark glossy green leaves, about 6 cm in length, giving a lush appearance. This highly branched plant will quickly reach 30 to 40 cm in height and 30 to 40 cm in diameter. Blooming from May-June until the first frosts, its abundant flowers are simple, cup-shaped, composed of 4 rounded petals, in a very cheerful scarlet red. They are grouped in trailing clusters. The plant tolerates temporary drought quite well. Its sterile flowers fade and fall naturally, reducing maintenance to a minimum.
The Red Dragon Wing Begonia is remarkably adaptable, tolerating full sun well while thriving in partial shade, especially in regions prone to intense summer sun. This begonia is perfect for planting in flower beds or planters, and also looks wonderful in large flower pots. Begonias flourish as ground covers, forming a dense and colourful carpet when mixed with other varieties. They pair well with light foliage plants and delicate flowers like lobelias, annual pennisetums, bacopas, bidens, and petunias. For a more exotic effect, they can be combined with cannas, castor beans, or ginger lilies, creating a bed of intense colours.

Botanical data
Attention: The seed of Begonia is very fine, delicately open the packet on two sides using a pair of scissors.
Sow the Dragon Wing Red Begonias in February in a seed tray using good quality soil mixed with 1/3 river sand; sieved on the surface to bind the seed to its substrate. Before sowing, lightly press the substrate with a board and moisten it slightly, preferably by immersing the base of the seed tray in a water tray so that the water is absorbed by capillarity. Sow your seeds gently. Do not cover the seeds. Place your seed tray in light, without direct sunlight, at a temperature of 25°C to 27°C.
Germination will take from 15 to 60 days. As soon as the plants are manageable, transplant them into 7 cm pots. Keep the soil moist, but not excessively during growth; Water with very fine light rain or use a small hand sprayer. Once the plants are strong enough, transplant them into 15 cm diameter pots or directly into your planters, kept warm (20-24°C). Finally, 15 days before their final placement, start gradually acclimatising them to a temperature of 15°C.
By the end of May or early June, the temperature will be warm enough in the garden to plant your young plants. Choose a shaded or sunny location. In flower beds, add a good shovelful of compost to each planting hole. Space your plants at least 20 to 30 cm apart.
Regularly remove faded flowers to keep the plant attractive and promote more.
In autumn, bring the pots indoors and let the foliage dry before extracting the tubers from the soil, brushing them and storing them dry until the following spring when they can be replanted in pots.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
