Begonia Big Red Bronze Leaf is a robust hybrid, ideal for borders. It offers large, upright single or double flowers in bright red which appear very early in the season. Their brilliance is enhanced by tufted, erect bronze foliage. Suitable for sun or partial shade exposure, especially in warm climates, this begonia continues to bloom from the appearance of the first flowers until the first frost, ensuring a colourful and constant presence in your containers or borders.
Begonia Big Red Bronze Leaf is a non-hardy herbaceous perennial plant, grown as an annual, belonging to the begonia family. It originates from several species native to Brazil through successive hybridisations. This variety is part of a series of recent hybrids selected for their particularly early flowering, upright, vigorous and tufted habit, and their brilliant, remarkable colours. 'F1 Big Red Bronze Leaf' has stout, fleshy stems covered with thick, heart-shaped, shiny leaves in a beautiful bronze green colour, about 5 cm in length. This plant will quickly reach 70 cm in height by 60 cm in diameter. Appearing from May until the first frost, its large flowers are asymmetrical and 8 cm wide. They are cup-shaped, open to the sky and composed of rounded, red petals arranged around a small yellow heart and clustered in axillary clusters. Begonias are monoecious and bear flowers with exclusively male attributes (single flowers) and others with female (double flowers), gathered in numerous terminal clusters.
The F1 Big Red Bronze Leaf Begonia is remarkably adaptable, tolerating full sun well while thriving in partial shade, especially in regions prone to intense summer sun. This begonia is perfect for planting in borders, in planters, and also excels in large flowering pots. The very early begonias from the F1 Big series flourish as ground cover, forming a dense and colourful carpet when mixed with other varieties. They blend well with light foliage plants and delicate flowers like lobelias, annual pennisetums, bacopas, bidens, and petunias. For a more exotic effect, they can be paired with cannas, castor oil plants, or ginger lilies, creating a bed of intense colours.

Attention: Begonia seed is very fine, carefully open the packet on two sides with a pair of scissors.
Sow Begonia Big Red Bronze Leaf in February in a seed tray. Use good quality soil mixed with 1/3 river sand; sieved on the surface to bind the seed to its substrate. Before sowing, lightly firm the substrate with a board and moisten it slightly, preferably by immersing the base of the seed tray in a water tray so that the water is drawn up by capillarity. Sow your seeds gently. Do not cover the seeds. Place your seed tray in light, without direct sunlight, at a temperature of 25°C to 27°C.
The seeds will germinate in 15 to 60 days. As soon as the plants are manageable, transplant them into 7 cm pots. Keep the soil moist but not excessively during growth; Water with very fine rain or with a small hand sprayer. Once the plants are strong enough, transplant them into 15 cm diameter pots or directly into your planters, keep warm (20-24°C). Finally, 15 days before their final placement, start gradually acclimatising them to a temperature of 15°C.
By late May to early June, the garden temperature will be warm enough to plant out your young plants. Choose a shaded or sunny location. In flower beds, add a good shovelful of compost to each planting hole. Space your plants at least 20 to 30 cm apart.
Regularly remove faded flowers to maintain beauty and promote renewal.
In autumn, bring the pots indoors and let the foliage dry out before extracting the tubers from the soil, brushing them, and storing them dry until the following spring when they can be replanted in pots.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
