Description
Celosia 'Celway Salmon' Spike Seeds allow you to quickly obtain numerous young plants of this annual to flower the garden. This horticultural variety of Celosia spicata is remarkable for its spikes grouped into inflorescences with a very geometric pattern. Their salmon-pink colour perfectly combines with the slightly dark green foliage. Perfect for creating romantic and long-lasting cut flower arrangements, this Celosia is also well-suited within sunny borders.
Celosia belongs to the Amaranthaceae family, which has representatives in temperate to tropical zones, such as the edible Goosefoot or the ornamental Atriplex, perfect for coastal areas. The Celosia genus is rich with around sixty wild species, mostly originating from Central and South America and Africa. They are essentially bushes, shrubs, or herbaceous plants, which grow in fertile, moist yet well-drained soil and in full sun. The geographical origin of the species Celosia spicata is not known with certainty, but it certainly comes from subtropical to tropical zones, hence its intolerance to frost. It is therefore cultivated as an annual in our temperate climates, and this is the salmon version of the horticultural group Celway® series. With rapid growth, Celosia 'Celway® Salmon' forms a medium-sized clump, reaching 70 cm in height and 50 cm in width. It is recognisable by its upright habit and its relatively narrow leaves (more so than Celosia argentea). Distinctly lanceolate, the leaves measuring 5 to 15 cm long, of a beautiful medium to slightly dark green, are abruptly narrowed at the base to attach directly to the stem. Positioned in an alternate fashion, the leaves, particularly those at the base of the plant, sometimes tend to take on a slight purplish hue. Around June-July, the plant begins flowering by producing a central spike 8 cm, or even 10 cm long, which somewhat resembles a wheat spike. It is surrounded by 4 or 5 smaller spikes that start horizontally from the base of the central spike, then rise diagonally. The entire inflorescence creates a particularly graphic and aesthetic three-dimensional structure. The individual flowers open from the bottom upwards and take on a very soft salmon pink colour. Blooming until the first frosts, the flowers hold up very well in a vase and allow for creating beautiful fresh bouquets to decorate the house. They remain decorative even as dried bouquets.
Celosia 'Celway Salmon' Spike fully deserves its place within sunny summer borders. Its original geometric inflorescences will combine harmoniously with compound flowers such as those of Dahlias, which also have sculptural forms. To lighten your scene, you can rely on Gauras which flowers have the grace of butterflies; Forget-me-nots to cover the ground; or even Gypsophila with its so airy flowering. Also consider coloured foliage like that of Coleus.

Planting and care
Sow Celosia 'Celway Salmon' from February to April in a seed tray. Use a good quality potting compost, offering a good balance between drainage and water retention. Sow your seeds by broadcasting. Cover the seeds by sprinkling with compost or vermiculite, press down lightly and water generously with a fine spray. Place your tray in the light, without direct sun, at a temperature of 24°C to 27°C.
Seed germination will take 14 to 21 days. Once the young plants have reached a height of 5 cm, transplant them into pots. Fifteen days before their final planting out, begin to acclimatise them gradually to a temperature of 15°C.
In late May or early June, the temperature in the garden will be warm enough to plant out your young plants. Choose a location in full sun. Add a good spadeful of compost to each planting hole. Avoid planting in chalky soils. Space your plants 25 cm apart. Water and mulch if necessary.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
