Description

Matsumoto Light Blue China Aster Seeds allow you to easily grow this floriferous and bright variety of Callistephus chinensis, prized for its large semi-double flowers in a soft lavender blue, enhanced by a vibrant yellow centre. Its upright, well-branched habit allows it to reach between 60 and 80 cm in height, making it an ideal candidate for summer borders and country bouquets. In the ground or in pots, it displays all its charm in dynamic and colourful floral compositions.

The China Aster, also known as the Annual Aster, is an annual originating from Asia and belonging to the Asteraceae family. Cultivated for centuries, it has given rise to numerous varieties prized for flower borders and bouquets. The Matsumoto Light Blue mixture produces vigorous, well-branched plants, reaching approximately 70 cm in height within a few months. They display bright green foliage with ovate and finely toothed leaves. They flower from June to September, depending on the sowing period, with pretty heads of about 6 cm, composed of coloured petals in a double row around a golden yellow central heart. Like any annual, this plant completes its entire cycle in one season, from germination to seed production.
The Matsumoto Light Blue China Aster integrates gracefully into compositions where colour and texture harmoniously interact. Its lavender blue flowers, borne on slender stems, bring an elegant height to sunny borders. In pots, the China Aster creates dynamic compositions, especially when combined with contrasting foliage or trailing plants. Three cultivars that pair particularly well with it are Dahlia 'Bishop of Llandaff', for its dark red flowers and sombre foliage, Rudbeckia hirta 'Cherokee Sunset' with its warm autumnal hues, and cosmos, for its light and airy flowers.

Planting and care

Sowing Matsumoto Light Blue Shasta Daisies: It is best not to sow these plants in the same location for two consecutive years. Sow outdoors from April to May, then transplant into position as soon as the young plants have 2 to 4 leaves, spaced 40 cm apart, in well-loosened, moist, and well-manured soil, choosing a sunny spot. Water frequently, but sparingly. It is beneficial to transplant several times while keeping the root ball intact to encourage root development and slightly restrain stem growth, which might otherwise break under the weight of the flowers. For earlier flowering, sow under a frame or on a hotbed, in trays, from February to April. Sow Shasta Daisies in trays filled with sand and peat under shelter at a temperature of 16 to 20 °C. Transplant into individual small pots when the seedlings have at least four leaves. Plant them out in the garden when they reach a height of 15 cm. Use stakes to support the taller varieties with very double flowers.

A later sowing in June allows for staggered flowering until the end of autumn. This sowing can be done directly in place in the garden.

These plants prefer a neutral or slightly chalky, fertile, and well-drained soil and require a sunny exposure. Generous watering will be necessary twice a week during dry periods, but take care to water the base and not the foliage, as Shasta Daisies are susceptible to powdery mildew. Remember to remove faded flowers as they appear to prolong flowering and prevent the plant from weakening.
