Description

Cosmos sulphureus Polidor is a variety of annual Cosmos with semi-double flowers, in vibrant colours ranging from lemon yellow to red, passing through orange. Its early flowering is very long, making it perfect for countryside gardens and for making country bouquets.

The Polidor variety has a medium-sized habit, reaching a height of 75 cm (30in) and spreading over 45 cm (18in). It is a very interesting Cosmos for flowering around the house or adding a touch of warmth to a flower bed. You can associate it with other annuals, such as Coreopsis Be Bop or Pavot Cherry Glow for a vibrant effect.

Originating from South America and belonging to the Asteraceae family, Cosmos sulphureus is a fast-growing annual plant that can reach 1.5 metres (5 feet) in its natural environment. It has a branching habit, with finely cut foliage (slightly less than Cosmos bipinnatus) in light green, and displays a tireless flowering from June to the first frosts.

Cosmos sulphureus Polidor is easy to cultivate. Its flowering is foolproof: poor soil, heat, humidity... Give it sun and, no matter what, it will flower.

It is a particularly melliferous plant, and if you refrain from doing a major autumn clean-up, you will certainly have the chance to admire birds (especially goldfinches) come to peck at the last seeds.

Planting and care

Sow Cosmos seeds from March to May, at a depth of 3mm (0.1in), in fine soil and cover the seeds with a very light sprinkle of vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a mini-greenhouse at a temperature of 18-25°C (64.4-77°F) or wrap it in a polyethylene bag. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.

Light promotes germination, which occurs 7 to 15 days after sowing. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots with a diameter of 7cm (3in).

Cultivate them in cooler conditions until the plants are sufficiently developed to be planted outdoors. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise the plants to outdoor conditions for 7 to 10 days.

Plant them in full sun, in moist, well-drained soil, spaced 45cm (18in) apart. Pinch the tips of the shoots on each stem during transplantation to encourage branching and the production of numerous flowers.

Cosmos prefer a soil pH between 6 and 8.5, corresponding to the soil in their native habitat, the alkaline regions of Central America. They prefer full sun but tolerate partial shade. These plants are drought-tolerant once established, they are not prone to diseases but can be targeted by aphids. Spontaneous seedlings are common but not always true to type, without becoming invasive.

Planting & care advice

  1. How to sow cosmos

Cosmos are easy-to-grow, long-flowering annuals (Cosmos bipinnatus, Cosmos sulphureus) ideal for borders, beds and pollinator-friendly gardens. Follow these steps for reliable results.

When to sow
- Sow under cover: 4–6 weeks before last expected frost.
- Sow outdoors: after all risk of frost has passed and soil has warmed.
- In mild climates: sow in autumn for early spring display.
- For continuous flowering: sow every 2–3 weeks until early summer.

Seed preparation and soil
- No special pre-treatment required; seeds can be sown dry.
- Choose well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Cosmos prefer lean to average soil; very rich soil encourages floppy growth.
- Position: full sun for best flowering.

How to sow
- Surface-sow or cover very lightly: press seeds into soil or cover with about 2–5 mm of compost or soil.
- Spacing: thin/plant out to 20–30 cm (8–12 in) for tall C. bipinnatus; 10–15 cm (4–6 in) for compact C. sulphureus.
- Germination: 7–21 days at around 18–24 °C; keep soil just moist until seedlings establish.

Practical care
- Watering: keep moist while seedlings establish, then water sparingly—cosmos tolerate drought and too much water reduces flowering.
- Feeding: little or no fertiliser; a light low-nitrogen feed encourages blooms without excessive foliage.
- Pinching: optional. Pinch growing tips when plants reach about 10–15 cm to encourage bushiness and more flowers, but note pinching delays first blooms slightly.
- Support: stake taller varieties in exposed sites to prevent flopping.

Maintenance and problems
- Deadhead spent flowers regularly to prolong bloom period.
- Pests/diseases: generally trouble-free. Watch for slugs on young seedlings and powdery mildew in humid, overcrowded conditions.
- To save seed: let heads dry on plant until brown, then collect seeds and store in a cool dry place.

Quick tips
- Sow directly where plants will flower to avoid root disturbance.
- Use succession sowing for long season of colour.
- Mix varieties for different heights and colours to create natural, airy displays.

With minimal attention, cosmos will reward garden with abundant, long-lasting flowers attractive to bees and butterflies. Tips
