Description

The Cosmos sulphureus Dwarf Ladybird Scarlet is a variety of dwarf Cosmos with semi-double flowers. It displays a color ranging from scarlet red to orange. Its flowering period is very long, making it perfect for country gardens and for making wildflower bouquets.

The Dwarf Ladybird Scarlet variety has a small habit, reaching 40 cm (15.7 in) in height and spreading to 40 cm (15.7 in). It is well-suited for small gardens, borders, and container gardening. The color of the petals varies depending on its location; the drier and sunnier it is, the redder the petals will become. Conversely, in slightly shaded and more humid conditions, the flowers will display a beautiful bright orange.

This is a very interesting Cosmos for flowering around the house or adding a touch of warmth to borders. You can combine it with other annuals, such as Cosmos Rubenza, Coreopsis Be Bop, or even with Poppies for a vibrant atmosphere.

Native to South America and belonging to the asteraceae family, Cosmos sulphureus or Sulphur Cosmos is a fast-growing annual plant that can reach 1.5 meters in its natural environment. It has a branched habit and bears finely cut foliage (although slightly less than Cosmos bipinnatus) in a light green color. It displays tireless flowering from June until the first frost.

The Cosmos sulphureus Dwarf Ladybird Scarlet is easy to grow. Its flowering is resilient to poor soil, heat, humidity... Give it sunlight, and no matter what, it will bloom.

It is a particularly pollinator-friendly plant, and if you refrain from doing a major autumn cleanup, you will likely have the chance to admire birds (especially goldfinches) coming to peck at the last seeds.

Planting and care

Sow Cosmos seeds from March to May, at a depth of 3mm (0.1 in), in a fine compost and cover the seeds with a very light sprinkle of vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a mini greenhouse at a temperature of 18-25°C or wrap it in a polyethylene bag. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.

Light promotes germination, which occurs 7 to 15 days after sowing. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots with a diameter of 7cm (2.8 in).

Cultivate them in cooler conditions until the plants are sufficiently developed to be planted outdoors. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatize the plants to outdoor conditions for 7 to 10 days.

Plant them in full sun, in a moist, well-drained soil, spaced 45cm (17.7 in) apart. Pinch the tips of the shoots on each stem, during transplantation, to encourage branching of the stems and the production of numerous flowers.

Cosmos prefer a soil pH between 6 and 8.5, corresponding to the habitat's original soil, the alkaline regions of Central America. They prefer full sun, but tolerate partial shade. These plants are drought-tolerant once established, they are not very susceptible to diseases, but may be targeted by aphids. Spontaneous seedlings are frequent, but not always true to type, without becoming invasive.
