The Dwarf Dahlia 'Unwin Ideal Mix' is a selection of garden Dahlias. It develops a lovely mix of single and semi-double flowers in soft and varied shades, light and dark: pink, orange, yellow, crimson, purple, and brick red, in a beautiful harmony of colours for the garden and bouquets. The sturdy and vigorous plant decorates borders, foregrounds of flowerbeds, and pots from June until the frosts.
Dahlias, from the asteraceae family, are originally native to the high plateaus of Mexico. Currently, some 20,000 horticultural varieties created by humans are grown in gardens worldwide.
The variety 'Unwin Ideal Mix' is a Dwarf Dahlia. The plant reaches 40 to 60 cm in all directions, it has a bushy and compact habit, not requiring staking. The flowering of this variety occurs from June to October. The heads measure 5 cm in diameter, they take the form of pretty simple corollas, composed of a row of well-opened ligules, in various colours. The central disk is yellow. The very branched stems are hollow and the leaves are opposite and divided into 3 or 5 very toothed lobes. The leaves and stems are dark green.
To promote reblooming and extend the flowering period, make sure to remove faded flowers. Even better, regularly cut them to create charming colourful bouquets by combining different varieties.
The Dahlias from the 'Unwin Ideal Mix' selection create beautiful splashes of colour at the edge of flowerbeds, in harmony with Coneflowers, Sneezeweeds, and Cosmos for example. Pair them with Pennisetum villosum, a feather-like grass, to add a touch of softness to the setting. This variety also thrives in containers, ideal for enhancing terraces and balconies.
Featured plants in borders and cottage gardens, Dahlias confidently accompany the most beautiful flowers as well as the humble ones from the vegetable garden. They create beautiful flowering pots or charming bouquets. In Mexico, this tuber was initially cultivated as a root vegetable for consumption. However, its poor taste qualities relegated it to the status of an ornamental plant. Since then, the interest in their beautiful exuberance has never waned.

Botanical data
Sow the dahlia Unwin Ideal Mix in February-March, in seed trays or pots with a seed compost placed in a propagator or in a warm place, to maintain a temperature of 18 to 20°C. Sow the seeds under 1.5 mm of fine compost. Germination will occur within 7 to 21 days. Transplant the young plants into 8 cm pots when they are large enough to be moved, taking care not to damage the roots. Harden these seedlings gradually, and transplant them when all risk of frost has passed, maintaining a spacing of 30 cm. Plant Dahlias in full sun after the last frosts, rich, moist and well-drained soils are perfect. However, stagnant moisture would promote tuber rot. Amend the soil with compost and sand if necessary. Work the soil deeply and enrich it for example with crushed horn or dehydrated blood. After planting, water generously once and then regularly for the first 6 weeks to aid in rooting. Dahlias are sensitive to cold, they need to be overwintered. In November when the first frosts blacken the foliage, it's time to dig them up. Carefully unearth the tubers. Remove as much soil as possible. Let the foliage dry, so that the tubers can replenish their reserves. Then cut the stems to 10 cm. Spread your bulbs in a crate on a newspaper. Store them frost-free in a dry, cool and dark place, such as a frost-free garage or attic for example. In regions experiencing only a few days of frost per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In this case, simply cover the ground with a layer of leaves or straw for protection.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
