Description

The Impatiens Beacon F1 ‘Pearl Island Mix’ Seeds will enable you to grow this frost-tender perennial, used as an annual in temperate climates, which charms with its delicate hues and abundant flowering even in shade. Its compact, dense, and rounded habit forms lovely regular clumps perfectly suited to borders, planters or flower beds. The single flowers in pastel shades of white, lavender and coral will brighten even the coolest areas of the garden. Highly disease resistant, this variety ensures healthy and continuous flowering until the first frosts. It requires cool, humus-bearing and well-drained soil while being averse to excessive dryness or overly scorching exposures.

The Impatiens walleriana Beacon F1 ‘Pearl Island Mix’ belongs to the Balsaminaceae family. Its botanical synonyms include Impatiens sultani, Impatiens holstii, Impatiens petersiana. It is commonly known as Busy Lizzie, Patient Lucy, or Garden Balsam. Native to the tropical regions of East Africa, particularly Kenya and Tanzania, this species has spread worldwide thanks to its popularity in gardens. Plants from the 'Beacon' series grow quickly and are grown as annuals in our climates. They were selected in the U.S.A. for their ability to tolerate full sun, and their resistance to powdery mildew and other diseases that commonly affect these plants. The Impatiens 'Pearl Island Mix’ develop from a thick stump into an upright clump with sturdy stems, forming a bushy, spreading habit of 40 to 50 cm in height, with a spread of about 35 cm. Flowering extends from June until the first frosts. The relatively small but very numerousflowers form a dense floral carpet that almost completely covers the foliage. Meanwhile, the intense green, ovate, and slightly dentate leaves provide a beautiful setting for the vibrant flower colours. The growth of this variety is rapid, allowing it to quickly fill empty spaces in beds or planters.

In a shaded garden, the Impatiens Beacon F1 ‘Pearl Island Mix’ reveals a delicate palette of white, lavender and coral, instilling softness and freshness beneath the foliage. Its compact, bushy habit integrates gracefully in the front of a border or in large pots on an east-facing or partially shaded terrace. For a subtle and contrasting display, pair it with the silver foliage of Lamium maculatum 'Sterling Silver', the chocolate tones of Heuchera ‘Obsidian’ or the graphic lightness of Athyrium ‘Ghost’. Together, these plants will create a poetic, textured and luminous arrangement, even in shaded areas.

Tip: To maintain adequate coolness and preserve soil moisture, we recommend applying a mulch around the base of the plants.

Planting and care

To successfully sow Impatiens walleriana Beacon F1 'Pearl Island Mix', begin by sowing the seeds indoors approximately 8 to 10 weeks before the last expected frosts. Use a light, well-drained compost, preferably enriched with organic matter. The seeds should simply be pressed onto the surface of the soil, as they require light to germinate. Maintain a constant temperature of around 20 to 24°C and ensure the growing medium remains moist, but not waterlogged. Germination should occur within 14 to 21 days. Once the seedlings are sufficiently developed, transplant them into individual pots, gradually acclimatising them to outdoor conditions. Wait until the risk of frosts has completely passed before planting them out in the ground or in containers, spacing them 15-20 cm apart.

Impatiens 'Beacon' are easy to grow. They should be placed in full sun or partial shade. To accelerate growth, bring them on in pots in a warm and bright location. Place the Impatiens in cool, well-drained soil rich in humus. Water regularly, but be careful not to overwater. Apply a liquid fertiliser for containers once or twice a week during the growth period. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as needed to maintain a neat appearance and prolong flowering. Be cautious and protect them from slugs, which are fond of its young leaves. Lastly, although this variety is resistant to downy mildew, it is important to monitor for anysigns of disease or parasitic issues and intervene promptly if necessary.
