Description
Penstemon hartwegii 'Arabesque Orchid' is a perennial penstemon to grow from seed which will produce long spikes of orchid-pink flowers within just a few months. This F1 hybrid forms a regular, well-branched clump covered in clearly bicoloured bell-shaped flowers. Flowering lasts all summer, like roses, perennials and annuals. In borders, flower beds, or a large pot on the patio, this variety makes quite an impression without needing much care.
The 'Arabesque Orchid' penstemon belongs to the Plantaginaceae family and descends from the botanical species Penstemon hartwegii, native to Mexico. It is a perennial or semi-woody undershrub with a bushy habit, whose foliage is semi-evergreen in mild climates. The Arabesque series was developed by Goldsmith Seeds, now part of Syngenta Flowers; it offers well-branched, uniform F1 hybrid penstemons, suited to growing in pots and in borders. Several coordinated colours are available (Red, Pink, Violet, Appleblossom, Orchid), some of which have won awards.
The plant develops a base from which numerous fine, upright, supple stems emerge, sturdy enough to remain perfectly vertical. Its growth is rapid: in one growing season, the clump reaches 50 to 60cm in height with a spread of 45 to 50cm. The medium to dark green foliage is composed of single, narrow, lanceolate leaves. In mild climates, some of the leaves remain in place throughout the winter. Flowering extends from June-July to September, sometimes October depending on the climate. The flowering stems bear long clusters of tubular flowers. Each measures 3 to 4cm in length with a deep pink tube, with an 'orchid' shade, that flares open into a wide white throat. The flowers produce nectar for bees. The fruits are small dry capsules containing numerous fine seeds. As it is an F1 hybrid, seedlings will not always faithfully reproduce the colour or habit of the parent plant.
Of medium size, Penstemon hartwegii 'Arabesque Orchid' can sit in the middle of a sunny flower bed or in a long border. It pairs well with the umbels of Achillea millefolium Saucy Seduction®, with its bright pink flowers, and Salvia nemorosa 'Amethyst', with its mauve spikes. To bring movement and colour in autumn, place a few clumps of Panicum virgatum 'Cheyenne Sky' behind these perennials and a border of tickseed 'Redshift' in front of them.

Planting and care
Sowing:
Sow the seeds of Penstemon 'Arabesque Orchid' indoors or under a cold frame from February to April on the surface of a good-quality seed compost, covering them with a very fine layer of compost or vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 15-20°C, or in a clear polythene bag until germination, which can take from 1 to 4 months. Keep the compost moist, but not waterlogged, and do not exclude light, as this encourages germination.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle, prick them out into 8cm pots or trays and grow the plants on in cooler conditions. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions for 7 to 10 days before planting them out. Space the plants 30cm apart.
Choose a fertile, light, well-drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded position. Penstemons can tolerate fairly dry soils, where they may become dormant. Improve heavy clay soils by adding plenty of compost, grit, or coarse sand before planting.
Care:
To successfully grow hybrid penstemons, the nature of the soil is crucial. They prefer rich, fairly moist, but very well-drained soils. In overly wet soils, they quickly rot. In cool climates, place the plants in a warm, sunny position, sheltered from cold winds (south or west facing). In warm climates, choose a damp, partially shaded position instead. Penstemon is not susceptible to any specific diseases.
This plant requires only minimal care. If the summer is dry, water regularly to support flowering.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
