Description

Zinnia elegans 'Meteor' is an heirloom variety with dahlia-like flowers, selected for its magnificent, deep red, double flowers. This generous and colourful annual develops sturdy, slender flowering stems, ideal for borders or bouquets. Zinnia 'Meteor' is heat-resistant and requires little maintenance, but demands well-drained soil. Enjoy its abundant flowering from early summer until the first frosts.

Zinnia elegans is an annual species from the Asteraceae family, native to Mexico, renowned for its heat tolerance. This species has given rise to numerous cultivars, including the remarkable 'Meteor', introduced in 1926. This dahlia-flowered selection is characterised by large, deep red, double inflorescences, almost burgundy when opening. Each plant forms a branched clump 60 to 90 cm in height when in flower and about 30 to 45 cm in width. The sturdy stems bear medium green, lanceolate to elliptical leaves. The 10 to 12 cm diameter flower heads are composed of broad, tightly-packed petals. The dense and generous flowering begins 9 to 12 weeks after sowing and renews itself from July until the first frosts. The flowers naturally attract butterflies and bees, thus promoting biodiversity in the garden. After pollination by insects, seeds form which can be harvested for sowing the following spring.

Zinnia elegans 'Meteor' shines in borders and summer bouquets. It will combine with complementary or contrasting hues. Pair it with Rudbeckia hirta 'Cherokee Sunset', for their harmonious coppery and golden colours. To lighten the scene and add height, add for example Verbena bonariensis, its fine purple inflorescences will dance above the zinnias. In bouquets, combine 'Meteor' with dwarf sunflowers, such as 'Teddy Bear', or with dahlias in peach or cream tones for a softer and more sophisticated effect. In borders or bouquets, 'Meteor' brings a beautiful vitality to all compositions.

Planting and care

Sow Zinnia 'Meteor' seeds directly outdoors in May, once the soil has warmed. Choose a location in full sun on moist, well-worked and well-drained soil previously weeded, loosened, and maintained. Sow the seeds at a depth of 3 mm in holes spaced 30 cm apart. Water regularly, especially during dry periods. Germination typically takes 7 to 14 days. When the zinnia seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out to space the plants 30 cm apart.

You can also sow indoors from March to April at a temperature of 15-25°C. After sowing, keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged, and expose your sowing to light to encourage germination. When the young plants are large enough to handle, transplant them and grow them in cooler conditions.

Once the plants are well-developed and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them gradually to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting outside in their final position. Zinnia elegans are easy plants to grow in the sun, in well-drained to dry soils, fairly rich, even clayey. They are susceptible to powdery mildew in humid climates, especially if they do not benefit from good air circulation around them. They perform well in climates with long, hot, and dry summers. They are not at all hardy.
