The seed packet is very expensive and I didn't get a single young plant. Very disappointed. Why doesn't this colour exist in young plants and not just in seeds?

Description

Knautia macedonica 'Melton Pastels' is a very graceful variety of Knautia that bears charming small flowers in soft shades of blue, mauve, pink, salmon, and purple throughout the summer. Also known as Knautie or Little Macedonian Scabious, it is a hardy perennial plant, similar to Scabious. Its bushy habit is particularly well-suited for borders and flower beds.

Native to Eastern Europe and belonging to the Dipsacaceae family, the Little Macedonian Scabious is fast-growing. It has a bushy habit (70cm (27.6 in) tall by 40cm (15.7 in) wide), and its globular flowers are carried by flexible and erect stems. In windy locations, staking may be necessary.

Knautia macedonica thrives in sunny and semi-shaded positions, in rich and well-drained soils, preferably slightly alkaline. It is easy to grow and may even self-seed spontaneously if the soil suits it, without becoming invasive.

With its light and rustic appearance, it is particularly well-suited for natural gardens and easily pairs with many perennials such as Burnet, Agastache, or even Liatris spicata. For a contemporary meadow effect, you can plant it in masses, alongside grasses.

It is a particularly attractive plant for bees and butterflies.

Planting and care

Sow Knautias from February to April on the surface of a good seed compost. Lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of vermiculite or sieved compost. Place the seed tray in a propagator (or enclose it in a polythene bag) or above a radiator, at a temperature of 21 to 24°C (69.8 to 75.2 °F). Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged during the germination period, which usually takes 10 to 30 days.

When the young plants are large enough to handle, proceed with transplantation. Gradually acclimatize the plants to cooler conditions until they are strong enough to be planted outdoors, once all risk of frost has passed. Transplant into a fertile and well-drained soil at a distance of 40cm (15.7in).
