I am disappointed with my order. The website states that the packets contain a minimum of 30 seeds, however, I received a repackaged packet containing only 8 seeds. I hope they will germinate because with so few seeds, the chances of success are still reduced.

Description

The mixture of Verbascum x hybrida 'Southern Charm' F1 Hybrid, also known as Mullein, is a collection resulting from successful cross-breeding. These have produced a range of very romantic pastel shades. The tall spikes composed of numerous small flowers in cream, lavender-pink and salmon-pink with a purple centre, bloom from June to August, attracting butterflies and other pollinators. Essential in herbaceous borders, it will allow you to create rather spectacular bouquets.

Most Verbascums share this tall and graceful appearance. Some are even nicknamed "Cierge de Notre Dame" in honour of the Virgin Mary. Their base consists of a rosette of large elliptical leaves, about 20cm (8in) long, in a grey-green colour, sometimes covered in down. From this base emerge stems that can reach almost 2 metres (7 feet) in certain species. They end in a spike covered with small 3 cm (1in) flowers with a corolla of five petals and five stamens that open gradually, one after the other. This height sometimes requires staking if the mulleins are exposed to wind. They are short-lived perennials that appreciate well-drained soil and cannot tolerate excessive winter moisture. However, they are resistant to drought and prefer sunny locations, while also tolerating partial shade. If the soil is suitable, they will self-seed, but the new generation will have different characteristics and offer you something new, as this mixture is the result of hybridization. For a possible flowering in early autumn, you can prune back the stems with faded spikes.

The mixture of Verbascum x hybrida 'Southern Charm' F1 Hybrid weaves its way through all borders among summer flowers. Its height, ranging from 60 to 120cm (24 to 47in), allows it to mingle with tall hollyhocks and delphiniums, as well as valerians, lupins, and Dame's Rocket. Its varied colours will blend in a pastel ensemble, complementing pink and salmon tones. If you wish to keep it within sight, container cultivation is possible, but don't forget to water and fertilize.

Planting and care

The seeds of Verbascum x hybrida 'Southern Charm' F1 Hybrid can be sown in a seed tray under cover in spring from March onwards, and even February for milder regions, as germination will occur between 15°C (59°F) and 18°C (64.4°F).

Just cover the seeds with a thin layer of compost (1 to 2mm) that you will keep slightly moist and place in the sun (essential for germination). They will germinate in 1 to 3 weeks. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into buckets (7/8cm (3in)). Later, when the plant is well established, you can put it in place. Choose a well-drained soil and a sunny spot.

As with other perennials, sowing can also be done in late spring, early summer to transplant the plants in place in autumn.
